The 2016 Reading Thread - June

June! We're almost halfway through the year!

The "rules" are simple: Keep a post/log of everything you read and list it on here. At the end of each month pick a "winner" (ie. the book you enjoyed the most for that month) and post it in the next month's thread. Refer to the 2015 or 2014 versions creeping around here for a solid example. I tend to focus on trades, but if you want to log your single issues, go for it. Don't start a new post each time you want to add something - simply edit your existing post. I tend to bold the issues/books that really stood out each month.

New This Year: Just to mix things up...the list seems to focus on quantity, so let's add quality into the mix. If you read a book that really knocked your socks off - put a sentence or two out from it that clues the rest of us in that this might be a book worth checking out. You don't have to do it for every book, and it's probably a good idea just to keep it to a sentence or two, but I think this'll add some fun to it and maybe generate a discussion or three.

The June reading list is here! The June reading list is here!

January Winner: Spidey #1 - The art is what sells me on this.
February Winner: Strange Fruit #1-2 - Has Mark Waid every written a stinker? (CGS Best Writer of 2015!)
March Winner: Spider-Man #1 - Miles Morales is back! YEAH!
April Winner: Peanut - This was a library book. Good story about a teen girl who switches schools and pretends she has a peanut allergy. I believe it was published several years ago.
May Winner: DC Universe: Rebirth #1 digital - DC is fun again!
June Winner: The Twilight Children TPB - I wasn't planning on reading so much Darwyn Cooke books this month, but this one was a fun little Twilight-Zone-y story. A little too adult for me to put it in my class room library which is what I was hoping for; nevertheless, the art was beautiful and the story was fun.

    June List:
    Single Issues/Digital:
    The Amazing Spider-Man #12
    The Amazing Spider-Man #1.5
Batman/The Spirit #1 (digital) - got this as part of the Darwyn Cooke sale just before he died. Damn he was a good artist.
    Civil War II #0
    Daredevil #7
    Darth Vader #20
    Doctor Strange #8
    Extraordinary X-Men #10
Jonah Hex #33 & #50 (digital) - more Darwin Cooke sale stuff.
    Stargate Atlantis #1
    Scooby Apocalypse #1
    Future Quest #1
    Batman #52
    Superman #52
    Munchkin #15 and #17
    Ragnarök #8
    Birthright #15
    Huck #1-3 (digital)
    Micronauts #2

    Collected HC/TPB/Digital
Fink TPB - I think Doug TenNapel (Earthworm Jim, Nnewts, Ghostapolis, Cardboard, etc.) is in my top five creators. Everything he's done is magic and a breath of fresh air after reading mainstream books. I think I've read almost all of his stuff.

The Twilight Children - I've read so many Darwyn Cooke books this month and while the stories have been hit or miss, the art has always been on. I think he's in my top 5 artists. This book was a great quick X-Files-y read.

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth - Vol. 13: "End of Days"

Wacky Racers #1 boy I think @nweathington summed it up neither wacky nor racing

Future Quest #1 - boy I liked this.

DK3 #3-4 - look I understand nobody's talking about it, but crap man I am enjoying this book.

I really didn’t mind the basic premise of racing through a post-apocalyptic wasteland. And I wasn’t necessarily looking for the book to be “wacky” and funny from start to finish. And they did manage to work in Peter trying to save Penelope, only to need rescuing himself, and Dastardly’s trap for Penelope backfiring on him. But the book lacked any charm or humor at all. And worse, the visual storytelling was very confusing in places, made all the worse by the muddy coloring. And I won't even go into the cars. Just not a good book. Very disappointing.

Future Quest, on the other hand, was pretty much everything I hoped for. The first half of the book really felt like a classic episode of Jonny Quest, even down to the dialogue. This was everything Wacky Raceland wasn’t.

Let me ask you, do feel like Future Quest, Scooby-Doo, and Wacky Racers are connected. I kinda feel like they might be especially after Future Quest #1.

Then again I could just be looking for stuff that is not there.

I really enjoyed Future Quest...and I have SD Apocalypse on the stack to be read. I think the whole "portal" thing showing up in FQ#1 could be a way to gateway all these series together if they decide to go that route.
  • nweathingtonnweathington Posts: 6,748
I didn’t get that feeling at all. The way I understood the portals was that they take you to points in a timeline, not to alternate worlds/dimensions. Now, I suppose they could say Scooby Apocalypse happens after Future Quest, and Wacky Raceland happens after Scooby Apocalypse, but Scooby has one specific form of apocalypse, while Wacky Raceland refers to several different, but concurrent forms of apocalypse happening all at once, so Scooby and Raceland don't really jibe as being part of the same timeline.

    Then again, this is comics.

Read Scooby Apocalypse #2 last night, and it's still a B- in my mind. My biggest problem with the series is that I don’t like Velma. I’m sure she’ll evolve over the series and become more likeable, but I don’t like not liking Velma. Any other character (outside of Scooby, of course)—fine. But they gotta make me dislike Velma?

I was never big on Velma. The whole "sexy Velma" cosplay thing is just beyond me. I actually dig her in this one. She's the "smartest person in the room" and things still went wrong...
