The 2016 Reading Thread - October

A chill wind begins to nip the air. Well, in MOST places. Where I live we're just thankful to see the temperatures drop to the 80s or so. Cacti don't tend to change color in the fall, and there's not much foliage to speak of in a desert. Still...it's not triple digit temps anymore, so it's a great chance to take your books outside for some reading. The rest of you? Probably a good day to stay in and do some reading.

The "rules" are simple: Keep a post/log of everything you read and list it on here. At the end of each month pick a "winner" (ie. the book you enjoyed the most for that month) and post it in the next month's thread. Refer to the 2015 or 2014 versions creeping around here for a solid example. I tend to focus on trades, but if you want to log your single issues, go for it. Don't start a new post each time you want to add something - simply edit your existing post. I tend to bold the issues/books that really stood out each month.

New This Year: Just to mix things up...the list seems to focus on quantity, so let's add quality into the mix. If you read a book that really knocked your socks off - put a sentence or two out from it that clues the rest of us in that this might be a book worth checking out. You don't have to do it for every book, and it's probably a good idea just to keep it to a sentence or two, but I think this'll add some fun to it and maybe generate a discussion or three.

    January Winner: Barbara (Digital Manga)
February Winner: Blast Furnace: Recreational Thief! (Indie)
March Winner: Multiversity: Collected HC (DC)
April Winner: Nisekoi Vol. 14 (Viz)
May Winner: I Hate Fairyland Vol. 1 (Image)
June Winner: Green Arrow Vol. 5: Black Arrow (DC)
July Winner: (TIE) Steve Lichman Vol. 1 for being so weirdly fun/Non Non Byori for giving me a nice escape from the horrors of this world. :)
August Winner: Darth Vader Vol. 1
September Winner: Casefile: Arkham Vol. 1 (01 Publishing)

    October Books:
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Vol. 4 (IDW) (Digital)
    Revival Vol. 7: Forward (Image)
Justice League 3001 Vol. 2: Things Fall Apart (DC) - Ends abruptly in the middle of the action because the book got cancelled to make way for Rebirth, but it's left some fun threads hanging out there that could be fun to see addressed down the road. The Batgirl/Flash teamup book from this series would be a must-buy for me if Giffen were still helming it.
Agents of Paradox (Crowdsourced) - a great little comic from a talented team. It was one of the longest kickstarters I've had to wait for (I wanted the trade not the individual issues) but well worth that wait.
Justice League: Darkseid War Vol. 2 (DC) - A good ending to the whole Justice League series, which I've enjoyed immensely and was one of the things I *did* enjoy about the New52.
Adventures of Supergirl TPB (DC) - Nice tie in with the TV show. While each artist had their own take on how to draw Kara, all were excellent. And the overall story was a good one as well.
Wonder Woman '77 Special #4 (DC)
Batman '66 Meets the Man from U.N.C.L.E. (DC) - Napoleon and Ilya are a tough-sell in this book because they're really just two guys in suits next to all the costumes. A good effort, but not up to the fun of the other ones.
    Netsuzo NTR Trap (Seven Seas)
    Master Keaton Vol. 8 (Viz)
Nisekoi Vol...ummm...we're in the teens somewhere. :)
Green Arrow Vol. 5 : Last Action Hero (DC)
Harley Quinn Vol. 6: Joker's Last Laugh (DC)
    Batman vol. 7: Bloom (DC)

January Winner: Spidey #1 - The art is what sells me on this.
February Winner: Strange Fruit #1-2 - Has Mark Waid every written a stinker? (CGS Best Writer of 2015!)
March Winner: Spider-Man #1 - Miles Morales is back! YEAH!
April Winner: Peanut - This was a library book. Good story about a teen girl who switches schools and pretends she has a peanut allergy. I believe it was published several years ago.
May Winner: DC Universe: Rebirth #1 digital - DC is fun again!
June Winner: The Twilight Children TPB - I wasn't planning on reading so much Darwyn Cooke books this month, but this one was a fun little Twilight-Zone-y story. A little too adult for me to put it in my class room library which is what I was hoping for; nevertheless, the art was beautiful and the story was fun.
July Winner: DC Rebirth Bundle! - Only a couple of stinkers out of the bunch here, but overall I really enjoyed reading each book. Many of them I was interested in what was going to happen in the upcoming issues. Too bad I didn't order them. I'm not going to pay twice monthly for these. I'll likely check out the trades when I hear what's good and what doesn't stick.
August Winner: Dark Knight: A True Batman Story OGN - This reminded me a lot of Steven Seagle's It's a Bird... It was tragic, yet hopeful. It sucks that Dini had to live through this and probably still has to deal with it, but I'm sure getting this out was very cathartic for him. The art was also beautiful and changes for different parts of the story.
September Winner: Jessica Jones: Alias Vol. 4 (digital) - I bought these recently in a comiXology sale for $4 each! This was a good series, but definitely stronger in the beginning. I expected more in Volume 4 than what was in there. Perhaps the Netflix series played a part in that? I really enjoyed the Jessica Jones Netflix series, and I feel that it was slightly better than these. Regardless, this was a joy to read and I would highly recommend them.

    October List:
    Single Issues/Digital:
    All-New Ghost Rider #1 (digital)
    Amazing Spider-Man #16-18
    Black Panther #1 (digital)
    Daredevil #10-11
DC: Rebirth #1 (digital) - I re-read this. It was still good and I caught a couple of things I missed before.
    Doctor Strange #10-11
Power Man and Iron Fist #1 (digital)
    Darth Vader #24
    Civil War II #5
    Extraordinary X-Men #13-14
    Han Solo #3
    Poe Dameron #5-6
    Silver Surfer #6
    Spider-Gwen #11-12
    Spider-Man #7-8
    Spider-Man 2099 #13-15
    Spidey #9-10
    Star Wars #22-23
    Head Lopper #1-4 (digital)
    Saga #38
    Paper Girls #9
    Birthright #19
    Trinity #1
Doom Patrol #1 - I know nothing about this series, so WTF did I just read?
    The Walking Dead #151-157 (digital)

    Collected HC/TPB/Digital
Ghostbusters Vol. 8: Mass Hysteria, part 1 (digital)
Ghostbusters Vol. 9: Mass Hysteria, part 2 (digital)
Ghostbusters: Get Real (digital) - Thus ends the Ghostbusters books I've bought from ComiXology. Each purchase was well worth the price. It was a fun series.
All-New, All-Different Avengers Vol. 1: The Magnificent Seven (digital)
Invincible Iron Man Vol. 1: Reboot (digital)
