The 2016 Reading Thread - November

The candy is put away. Several of us are tackling National Write a Novel in a Month month. Visions of turkey, football, and pumpkin pie abound in my head, and for those of you who live outside of a flippin' DESERT there's cool weather and autumn leaves. Now get to readin'!

The "rules" are simple: Keep a post/log of everything you read and list it on here. At the end of each month pick a "winner" (ie. the book you enjoyed the most for that month) and post it in the next month's thread. Refer to the 2015 or 2014 versions creeping around here for a solid example. I tend to focus on trades, but if you want to log your single issues, go for it. Don't start a new post each time you want to add something - simply edit your existing post. I tend to bold the issues/books that really stood out each month.

New This Year: Just to mix things up...the list seems to focus on quantity, so let's add quality into the mix. If you read a book that really knocked your socks off - put a sentence or two out from it that clues the rest of us in that this might be a book worth checking out. You don't have to do it for every book, and it's probably a good idea just to keep it to a sentence or two, but I think this'll add some fun to it and maybe generate a discussion or three.

    January Winner: Barbara (Digital Manga)
February Winner: Blast Furnace: Recreational Thief! (Indie)
March Winner: Multiversity: Collected HC (DC)
April Winner: Nisekoi Vol. 14 (Viz)
May Winner: I Hate Fairyland Vol. 1 (Image)
June Winner: Green Arrow Vol. 5: Black Arrow (DC)
July Winner: (TIE) Steve Lichman Vol. 1 for being so weirdly fun/Non Non Byori for giving me a nice escape from the horrors of this world. :)
August Winner: Darth Vader Vol. 1
September Winner: Casefile: Arkham Vol. 1 (01 Publishing)
October Winner: Adventures of Supergirl TPB (DC)

    November Books:
Jack Kirby's Fourth World featuring Mister Miracle (DC) - I know enough about 4th World to be dangerous. Now I know a bit more, so I'm not quite as dangerous.
Land of the Rising Dead: A Tokyo Schoolgirl's Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse (Seven Seas) - Not a full-fledged comic, per se, but half-textbook, half manga, all funny version of what you need to do to survived the horde onslaught.
Monster Girl Encylopedia Vol. 1 (Seven Seas) - Not for the kiddies, but if you ever wanted to know what it'd be like to do it with a centaur, mermaid, ogress, etc...this is your book.
Supergirl Vol. 1 (Peter David) (DC) - Loved the Peter David run on Supergirl and I'm really happy they're going back to print on it. Hopefully they'll take it through the entire run.
    Supergirl Vol. 1 & 2 (Jeph Loeb/Joe Kelley) (DC)
Princess Leia (Marvel) - Nein Nunb's in it. Automatic classic!
Vampirella: Feary Tales (Dynamite) - Fun take on all the Grimm Fairy Tales by putting Vampi smack dab in the middle of them all.

Basing it solely off my "winners" list -

Barbara - because if you're any type of creative you know all about muses and how fickle they can be
Blast Furnace: Recreational Thief - a nice flip of the finger to anyone who says they "don't have time" to make a comic
Multiversity - a nice tome collecting the whole wonderful mess that is the DCU. A love letter.
I Hate Fairyland - The book I wished I had made...but since Young's already doing it I'll just enjoy his. :)
Steve Lichman - absolutely brilliant. Arguably the best out of this lot.
Non Non Byori - equally good as an anime, but I enjoy this manga take on it as well.

    Blast Furnace: Recreational Thief
    I Hate Fairyland
    Rick and Morty
    Plantese Omnibus vol 1
    Dark Knight 3

January Winner: Spidey #1 - The art is what sells me on this.
February Winner: Strange Fruit #1-2 - Has Mark Waid every written a stinker? (CGS Best Writer of 2015!)
March Winner: Spider-Man #1 - Miles Morales is back! YEAH!
April Winner: Peanut - This was a library book. Good story about a teen girl who switches schools and pretends she has a peanut allergy. I believe it was published several years ago.
May Winner: DC Universe: Rebirth #1 digital - DC is fun again!
June Winner: The Twilight Children TPB - I wasn't planning on reading so much Darwyn Cooke books this month, but this one was a fun little Twilight-Zone-y story. A little too adult for me to put it in my class room library which is what I was hoping for; nevertheless, the art was beautiful and the story was fun.
July Winner: DC Rebirth Bundle! - Only a couple of stinkers out of the bunch here, but overall I really enjoyed reading each book. Many of them I was interested in what was going to happen in the upcoming issues. Too bad I didn't order them. I'm not going to pay twice monthly for these. I'll likely check out the trades when I hear what's good and what doesn't stick.
August Winner: Dark Knight: A True Batman Story OGN - This reminded me a lot of Steven Seagle's It's a Bird... It was tragic, yet hopeful. It sucks that Dini had to live through this and probably still has to deal with it, but I'm sure getting this out was very cathartic for him. The art was also beautiful and changes for different parts of the story.
September Winner: Jessica Jones: Alias Vol. 4 (digital) - I bought these recently in a comiXology sale for $4 each! This was a good series, but definitely stronger in the beginning. I expected more in Volume 4 than what was in there. Perhaps the Netflix series played a part in that? I really enjoyed the Jessica Jones Netflix series, and I feel that it was slightly better than these. Regardless, this was a joy to read and I would highly recommend them.
October Winner: Head Lopper #1-4 (digital) - I got this in a recent Image sale and thought I remembered hearing some things about it and it did not disappoint. It felt like a Mignola meets Adventure Time book. Gruesome in parts, but a good read.

    November List:
    Single Issues/Digital:
    Ragnarok #10
    Birthright #20
    Paper Girls #10
    Saga #39
    Amazing Spider-Man #19-20
