There has been a distinct lack of Nick Cardy in this thread. So here he is putting the “splash” in splash page from Aquaman #39. The inset panels themselves become part of the “hail of ‘shrapnel’”.
The first time I saw this wasn't the original comic, but as a pinup with a numbered chart identifying all the characters in the back of a Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes treasury-sized edition. That treasury, and particularly this two-page spread, was my introduction to the Legion.

I had that, too. My introduction to LoSH was #202. It's one of those great 100 page books. It also features some fantastic Dave Cockrum model sheets.

This issue was the 1st time I bought an expensive back issues (like 20.00 in 1987ish). Huge Cyclops fan at the time. I became a Neil Adams fan on that day.
Silver Surfer: Judgment Day --- an original HARDCOVER GRAPHIC NOVEL before that was really a thing, written by Stan Lee with art from JOHN BUSCEMA!!!!! And every page was a full-page splash. A favorite of mine.

I keep telling myself that I'm going to read the first 12 issues again.
