The 2018 Reading Thread - The Extreme Ultimate Edition - January

A tradition unlike any other returns! The reading thread is back.

The rules as laid down by the great and powerful @Torchsong are simple:

Log everything you've read this year. Just edit your existing post or you (and we) will get confused trying to keep up. At the end of each month I'll start a new thread and you can pick a "winner" from your favorite books. You can focus on just trades (which is usually what I do), or just write about the good stuff you've read.

December Winner:
Marvel Epic Collection Excaliber vol 1

January List:

Marvel Epic Collection Power Man & Iron Fist vol 2 "Revenge!"

Amazing Spiderman Omnibus vol 2 (I might be able to finish this in January)

@Torchsong you should. I'm still bitter about December. I did a ton of EoY reading and no December thread.
    So here's my January list:

Rock Candy Mountain 1-4 (digital) - an undefeatable hobo on the run from the devil, the FBI, and his past quests for the Big Rock Candy Mountain. I recommend the issues the backmatter on hobo life is interesting.

    Rick and Morty #32-33 (digital)

Delicious in Dungeon vol. 3 - I am still loving this book.

    KoDT #180-194

I'll bite. Especially since one of my NY Resolutions is to read at least one comic a day from my collection. Because it's feeling neglected. Ha.

    January:
    I started so far with:
Justice 1-5 by Ross, Krueger, Braithwaite and co. It's like a modern day Challenge of the Super Friends with the JLA vs Legion of Doom!

    How did you like it?

So far so good! It’s along the lines of Earth X, where it won’t reach the status of Marvels or Kingdom Come, but as a stand-alone out of continuity story, it’s a fun ride. Some very interesting moments/uses of powers/character interactions. Looking forward to the rest of the ride.

@Peter How did you like Batman Metal? The trades are getting ready to come out, is it worth jumping in?
Also thank you for doing the Legion podcast; I decided to start my Legion journey with that series just a few months before you started the podcast. I've really enjoyed it.

You didn't ask me, but just jumping in with my two cents.

It's not over 100% just yet, but, while I personally find it enjoyable, I also find it...scatterbrained. I keep feeling like I'm forgetting something or missing an issue or reading something out of order. If I had a list to follow, it may make things easier. But the way I've read the solicits, I've yet to see a cohesive DC Metal trade. Just the main series by itself, then the different Dark Multiverse Batmen by themselves, etc.

But it's an interesting concept and I'm glad I read it!

EDIT: Speaking of a reading order, I found this! CLICK HERE. Seems pretty cohesive. I'm going to try and re-read everything I had in this order and see if it helps.

This month has been a great reading month for me. I was finally able to cross Strangers in Paradise off of my list of books to read before I die just in time to be able to read the new issue when my DCBS order arrives. I caught up on the latest two volumes of Amulet. I read two of my wife's Christmas presents to me, Jack Cole and Plastic Man and Beasts of Burden: Animal Rites.

I also dug one of the strangest cheap bin purchases I've ever made out of my collection, Rockin Rollin Miner Ants #2. I wondered what a TMNT knockoff about ants would be like. Turns out...it's about elephant poaching. I never saw that one coming! And to believe, at one point, I thought Cyborg Gerbils was as weird as a TMNT knockoff could get.

However, my favorite thing I read this month is The Other Sides of Howard Cruse. I had been largely unfamiliar with Cruse's work prior to reading this. It is both informative and entertaining and encouraged me to seek out more of his work and learn more about him. And, as an added bonus, I bought this wonderful hardcover for $1.99 at a local Ollie's Bargain Outlet in pristine condition. From the kid's section! I'm sure Cruse himself would appreciate the irony.
