I enjoyed all of last season's episodes, but the second ha;f really kicked it into overdrive.
Maybe Darabont going wasn't so bad after all.
That seems to be the popular consensus. I honestly don't think he was the right fit for the show. Like you, a lot of people felt the second half was an improvement over the first half, in terms of pacing and storytelling.
Even though Darabont left before the season started, those first 7 episodes were written when he was still running the show. Episode 8 (the first after the break) was the first written under Mazzara. Within an episode, you can see what a difference it made.
