Who... is your favorite?

I have recently started watching Doctor Who for the first time. I'm starting with the original Doctor, in hopes to pick up the stories from the beginning. I am very interested in picking up the new Doctor Who / Star Trek TNG comic which has the new Doctor in it. I was just curious which Doctor was people favorite over the years.

It's a tie between Tom Baker and Christopher Eccleston.

Believe it or not - on paper I like them all equally. When I watch/read/listen Doctor Who I totally buy the fact that it's always the same being - just with changed appearance and voice (and with better production value). The most current Doctor naturally is the one with the most experience and memories. Thus I tend to like the current Doctor a bit more than the previous ones.....

The quality of the series depends heavily on the writing (and presentation on screen).

Classic: Peter Davison because he was my first Doctor. Although I have a real soft spot for Colin Baker, he really seems to have come into his own through the Big Finish audio adventures. (his time on the actual series was somewhat plagued by Michael Grade being a pain in the arse)

New series/reboot: David Tennant all the way.

David Tennant, Tom Baker, Patrick Troughton, and Jon Pertwee are all pretty much on the same plateau for me, but if I had to rank them, they'd probably go in that order.

He also got saddled with a script editor (Eric Saward) who seemed to prefer that the Doctor take a back seat to whatever leather daddy mercenary happened to wander into the plot that week. And, of course, The Worst Costume In Television History. But yeah, the man himself was pretty awesome, and the Big Finish audios I've heard are far superior to his televised stories. If you enjoy Doctor Who, you owe it to yourselves to listen to "...Ish" and "The Holy Terror."

Tom Baker will always be my first choice but he is followed closely but Tennant and Eccleston.

Colin Baker is probably the most underrated Doctor of the bunch.
  • In order:
    Peter Davison
    Tom baker
    Matt Smith
    Patrick Troughton
    David Tennant
    Jon Pertwee
    William Hartnell
    Christopher Eccleston
    Sylvester McCoy
    Colin Baker

and then the loser guy that shall not be named

The Tardis has seen many more actors in the role - some are:

Richard Hurndall played the Doctor in The Five Doctors (as the first Doctor, replacing the deceased William Hartnell)

Paul McGann had a rather short run as the eight Doctor in 1996 (+ some stage and audio appearances)

Peter Cushing was the Doctor on the big screen 1965/66 - those films are good fun.

Let's not forget Richard E. Grant and Hugh Grant

For my money though Roger Delgado is still the definitive Master.

    McCoy.
    Leonard McCoy, that is.

Heck, I didn't even know one of those doctors was named McCoy.

Christopher Eccleston is my favorite doctor. Being my first doctor no one can quite live up.

It's all about Paul McGann. Dead serious. I don't care what you haters say.

McGann had the potential to really be the definitive Doctor and like Colin Baker has really shined in the audios. Sadly he hasn't had enough air time to really stretch his legs in the role. I would love to see him make an appearance in the new series. Do a 7 Doctors special with Davison, Baker, McCoy, McGann, Eccleston. Tennant, Smith. Smith would come unglued trying to contain his other selves or it would be like Christmas!

My first exposure to the Doctor was Tom Baker, and they often say you never forget your first time! ;) So to me Baker is the standard by which other doctors will always be measured. Now Having said that, my favorite version of the doctor, and actor in the role, was John Pertwee as the third doctor. Mainly because during his tenure they had sever budgetary problems, and thus the Tardis was "grounded" keeping him on Earth - as a result it really fell on Pertwee and his acting ability to help carry the show. Didn't hurt that I'm a Brigadeer Lethbridge-Stewart fan and he and the rest of UNIT were in most of those episodes.

And yes, McGann had tons of potential to be a great doctor. Shame it just didn't work out.

That's like saying its all about JarJar
    Or it's all about Wesley.
    Sheesh!

I didn't include Atkinson or anyone else for that video, or Cushing, as they are not cannon. If I were to include them I would put Atkinson between smith and Troughton, r grant between baker and smith, h grant between McCoy and baker, lumley between Hartnell and Eccleston, Cushing between through ton and Tennant.
I, obviously, thought Mcgann was the worst. I am stunned he has a fandom. But then again his fandom is as bad as that episode/movie.
  • Like many, it's all about Tom Baker for me. My first Doctor, my uncle introduced me to the series on PBS, so good....

I'm a big fan of Patrick Troughton as the second Doctor. I found his version of the character very cool and he would be someone I would want to travel with.

McGann got saddled with a crap script, crap cast (Eric Roberts as the Master?!?), and very little input into how his Doctor should look or act, and it all shows on the screen. I think he did alright considering, though (the movie's bad, but he's alright, I think), and some of the BBC novels published after the movie were decent, though man oh man did they beat the whole amnesia thing into the ground. Dude lost his memory like 348 times!

Haven't heard any of his Big Finish audios, but I know a lot of people who say they're pretty good.

If I had to rank them all in order, I'd say:

    David Tennant
    Tom Baker
    Patrick Troughton
    Jon Pertwee
    Colin Baker
    Matt Smith
    Sylvester McCoy
    Christopher Eccleston
    Peter Davison
    William Hartnell
    Paul McGann

But that's just how I feel today. Tomorrow it could be very different.
  • Tom Baker was my first exposure to the Doctor, as a kid... First in those Marvel Premiere comics (which confused and intrigued me), and then on TV. I enjoyed Davidson, etc. but Baker was it for me...

And THEN came David Tennant... He's my No. 1, Baker my No. 2.
