I, obviously, thought Mcgann was the worst. I am stunned he has a fandom. But then again his fandom is as bad as that episode/movie.
McGann got saddled with a crap script, crap cast (Eric Roberts as the Master?!?), and very little input into how his Doctor should look or act, and it all shows on the screen. I think he did alright considering, though (the movie's bad, but he's alright, I think)...
This. I see the tree for the forest on this one. It's not that McGann was horrible at all. If you just watch his performance and get rid of the rest of the papsmear that was that movie, you'd have a really good Doctor. Unfortunately he was stuck with a bad script, the worst Master in recorded history, a pretty bland assistant...well, there it is.
Joanna Lumley played the good doctor in the comic strip spoof "The strange case of sudden death". And was very good too! I'd love to have her as the next doctor, her or Helen Mirren! Other dream doctors would be Hugh Laurie, Lenny Henry, or Gary Oldman.
From the original series it is Pertwee all the way. First with Sarah Jane, first car (Bessie), first flying car, he piloted hovercrafts and he wore a cravat. Nothing cooler
As for the newer series it has to be David Tennant. I think he really got to play with the character of the Doctor than Eccholston but I think that sometimes Matt Smith is a little too over the top, as if he has had to go further than Tennant in his portrayal.
Secretly the best doctors were Richard E Grant & Joanna Lumley
For me, it goes back to Pertwee, and sitting with my grandfather (who was a HUGE Who fan) to watch The Curse of Peladon. Then, I grew up watching Tom Baker on PBS and TVO. I haven't seen too many of the others, though I got a crash course in Hartnell and Troughton when I got digital cable in 2003 and BBC Canada was running them seemingly 24/7.
I've got all of the recent stuff, now it's just a matter of finding the time to sit down and watch it all.
I didn't enjoy Pertwee much the first time I watched him when I was a kid because I was annoyed so many stories were Earth-bound. I've gone in a complete 180 since them and consider him one of my favorites now for pretty much the same reason, oddly enough... the Pertwee/UNIT era is like The Avengers with monsters in it, and that's just awesome.

I agree completely. The one that roped me in was Peladon, which is one of the non-Earth based Pertwees. Save for the nostalgia of his being my grandad's favourite Doctor, that might not have carried through for me. These days Pertwee with UNIT, the Brigadier and all that, I just love it!
Pertwee was quite good but he really kicked off the sonic screwdriver which has since turned into the key to getting through every episode. When the Doctor can wave it in the air and look at its metal casing and tell anything from it, the device is done!
Christopher Eccleston is my favorite doctor. Being my first doctor no one can quite live up.
I have to go with that too. After that its David Tennant and then Matt Smith. I haven't really watched enough of the classic show to have much of an opinion but from what I have seen I would rank them thusly:
1- Tom Baker 2- Peter Davison 3- Patrick Troughton 4- Sylvester McCoy 5- William Hartnell 6- Jon Pertwee 7-Paul McGann
I have not seen any of Colin Baker's episodes yet so I can't say anything about him.
Is Rowan Atkinson considered part of continuity? I have read a couple things that said yes, but that was before the modern series launch. I can't see how it could be. Does anyone know for certain?
Baker's era seemed sharper and better quality ( so to speak) and the newer stuff feels different and Eccleston was great of those three. Pertwee remains my favorite. I like my Doctor to be a bit off a prick and the three mentioned had that in them in various degrees.
