I never really knew much about Joe other than the fact he had 2 sons and ran a school. Then earlier this year I started listening to the older episodes of CGS and not 2 weeks ago I heard the one with the Joe Kubert interview. I was completely charmed by this sweet old man and his wonderful stories. I am very sad I'll never get the chance to meet him or talk to him about his career (although in the interview he did mention his distaste for cons). Thanks to the CGS crew for the great interview and thanks for reposting that episode where more people will find it.
To those looking for Kubert work (if you are unfamiliar), PLEASE pick up his book Fax From Sarajevo. A brilliant, moving book that is based on actual events that happened to comic art agent Ervin Rustemagić and will stay with you for years after you read it.
Joe Kubert work is timeless. He seemed timeless until this heartbreaking news.
What we can learn from Joe Kubert is that you're never to old to keep practicing your craft. It seemed he still had things to say and was still putting out work. Whether it was comic-related or in education, he seemed to be moving forward. He never "retired". Its a lesson we can all learn. He best stuff came late in life. (the aforementioned Fax from Sarajevo). Joe Kubert...... Charles Schulz...... Frank Lloyd Wright..... all artists who continued to work until the end.
If you're feeling down... think about Joe Kubert..... he never stopped and his best stuff was the next thing he was working on. Life isn't over until its over.
Posted a tribute to Kubert and The Kubert School over on my Wicked Decent Learning blog. Figured some of the other edu-geeks around these parts might be interested.
I got to meet him a few years ago and say thank you for his contribution to the medium. I wish I could have said more. I wish I had read more of his work by the time I had met him. Despite saying thank you, you always wish there was more you could do.
