Just (re-)read Superboy #195.

I had forgotten about the multitude of powers ERG originally had.

Yeah, that caught me by surprise. I had no idea he had that much power. In everything else I've read, it was mostly just energy blasts and getting blowed up real good.

Like many characters, he's as powerful as the story requires him to be.

It's been rationalized as each suit having its own affect on his powers and none of them being quite as good as the first.
