@Caliban Difficult to get in pristine condition, but those blacks really do make it dramatic!
@dubbat138 Agree SO MUCH about a high quality collection of Dave Stevens covers. I imagine the permissions on all those indie covers would be a nightmare to work out, but I think it would be a sell out success!
Here's my one measley Marvel cover for the day from 1973. ;-) This thread is massively out-performing its title (in a good way).
Comics.org lists joint credits on this one -- Pencils by John Romita and Marie Severin. Inks by Mike Esposito and John Verpoorten.
Although this issue was just a little before the time I was collecting every one, the Defenders was one of my favorite titles as a kid, *especially* the Steve Gerber issues later!
@RobAnderson@John_Steed Yup, difficult to find nice copies of that issue. All the covers I am posting are scans from my own long boxes. Not had them appraised but guide at that grade says $160 http://bit.ly/LIqgGs
I have a lot of those books with the Steven's covers, too. And, I bought them for the same reason.
Like I said in an earlier post in this thread some company needs to put out a trade or even better an oversized hardcover of all the various Dave Stevens covers. Any time I am looking through cheap comic bins I will always look for comics with Stevens artwork on the covers.
It saddens me that to this day Dave Stevens is still mostly unknown in Europe (especially throughout the German speaking countries...) - even his Rocketeer was never a huge hit. Over here it seems like only a small group of insiders appreciate his work. The Rocketeer Deluxe HC was translated to German - but didn't sell too well :-??

Those early issues of the Defenders all had great covers.

All the covers I have posted are from comicbookDB. But so far besides one comic, they are all comics I currently own.
I loved the Topps "Kirbyverse" comics. And wish more had come out. Plus the interior artwork is by Steve Ditko. I for one can't hate a comic that has both Kirby and Ditko artwork in it.
