BEST NEW HERO : Alana and Marko
    from "SAGA". They are one.

BEST NEW VILLAIN: Any villain on "SAGA"

    BEST NEW COMIC: "SAGA"
Fiona Staples and Brian K. Vaughn: The best combo since fish fingers and custard. And publisher Image pretty much rules them all....

    BEST LIMITED SERIES: "Before Watchmen:__________"
I like the concept. I like the characters. I like the various artists involved. I understand that it's limited. Therefore....

BEST SINGLE ISSUE OR ONESHOT: "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century 2009"
Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill deliver once again. As always this his heady stuff. One has to enjoy doing research to fully grasp the ingenuity of this work.

BEST CLIFFHANGER OR MOMENT: That gruesome slaying of a beloved character in "The Walking Dead" #100
When a killing in a series of books that depicts killing on a monthly basis is so disturbing that one doesn't want to keep on reading - that tells a lot. That scene will haunt me forever. And yet - I keep on buying that friggin' book.....

BEST STORY IN A SERIES OR MULTIPLE SERIES: "SOMETHING TO FEAR - The Walking Dead"
Issues #97-102, I'm still angry and very sad....

    BEST SLEEPER/SURPRISE HIT: "Hawkeye"
After all the talk I had to check this out and right away fell in love. Matt Fraction and David Aja are doing an awesome job and made me buy a Marvel series (in singles) again. And those covers are very stylish.

    BEST ONGOING COMIC: "SAGA"

BEST REPRINT COLLECTION: "Kamandi, The Last Boy On Earth Omnibus Vol. 2"
    Jack Kirby!

BEST ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVEL: "The Underwater Welder"
Jeff Lemire does the impossible: His art style is very rough, sometimes even ugly and very rushed, and yet, it remains unique and true or... "Lemirish. One recognizes a Lemire. Thus the art is special...in a good way. It becomes beautiful. Lemire's writing is very poetic and poignant. His themes always hitting close to home. We all have our demons. We all experience loss. We all are growing up and are part of this crazy thing called life. The only OGN I've read more than once in 2012.

BEST PUBLICATION ABOUT COMICS: "Marvel Comics: The Untold Story"
Sean Howe's take on the "secret" history of Marvel is a very entertaining read. And the missing visuals can be googled....

BEST WRITER : Brian K. Vaughn
for SAGA. Best Space Opera since 1977.

    BEST ARTIST: Fiona Staples
for SAGA. And she also does the inking, the coloring, the lettering and covers!!!!

    BEST WRITER/ARTIST: Chris Ware
"Building Stories" is a masterpiece for the ages.

    BEST INKER: Gabriel Rodriguez
for his great job with "Locke & Key"

    BEST COLOR ARTIST: Fiona Staples
    "SAGA" is gorgeous.

BEST LETTERER: Fonografiks, Steven Finch and Fiona Staples
The "handlettering" and how it's positioned within the panels is outstanding.

BEST EDITOR: the entire editorial staff at IMAGE

    BEST COVER ARTIST: Yuko Shimizu
Her covers for "The Unwritten" are breathtakingly beautiful.

BREAKTHROUGH TALENT OF 2012: Ramón Pérez
I didn't take notice of this artist prior to his magnificent job on the "A Tale of Sand". Hope to see more of his talent in the near future.

BEST COMIC PROJECT IN ANOTHER MEDIUM : "ARROW"
I didn't have high expectations but after the first episode of this TV series I was hooked. It's just all around great fun. A big surprise to me - and I hope they can keep this going for a long while.

MOST IMPORTANT NEWS OF 2012 : Disney going on a shopping spree...

MOST ANTICIPATED FOR 2013: price drop for digital comics

BEST REVAMP OF AN EXISTING CHARACTER OR CONCEPT: "Prophet"
Indie legend Brandon Graham turned this average book into a very compelling epic sci-fi saga. It's big. Highly recommended read.

I would also add, as a guideline to consider, that you don't HAVE to vote in every category. If there is a category that you just don't feel you have done enough reading to make an informed vote, you can always leave it blank. I know I do that each year. There are some technical categories that I sometimes just don't feel like I have the eye to be able to judge, so if, say, there is no single letterer that stood out to me enough for me to say he or she is the best, I just skip that category. I could just put in the name of the letterer of a favorite comic of mine, but if I haven't really paid attention to the lettering relative to the other comics I read, then I am not really voting on lettering. I am just filling a blank.

Put another way. . . if the only print publication about comics you've read in 2012 was a catalogue (and you didn't even read any of the scant articles in that catalogue, so it really was just a catalogue to you) you may want to consider not voting in that category rather than making the one thing that barely applies your default vote if you don't have anything to compare it to.

My own two cents, for what it is worth. Some excellent publications about comics came out in 2012, in magazine and book form. If you didn't read any of them, that's okay. Most comics readers don't read publications about comics.

But don't then make those publications lose out on getting some praise and attention by dumping Previews into that category just to avoid leaving it blank. You know what I mean?

Sadly, I am going to have to leave that one blank this year. I had a few to pick from last year (Morrison's SuperGods, Marvel Comics in the 1970s), and I haven't got to read Marvel: The Untold Story yet. So I have nothing I can knowledgeably vote for this year.

I think this is the first time in years that I haven't picked up, read, or flipped through a single Previews catalog!

    That's....crazy.

I'll probably look to the rest of you guys for noms on stuff.

BEST NEW HERO (debut in 2012) – Jake & Finn from the new Adventure Time comic book series! Also, Simon Baz, the 2012 addition to the Green Lantern universe. A Muslim American from a large Arab-American community in Michigan adds nice diversity to the DCU and is a close 2nd

BEST NEW VILLAIN (debut in 2012) – Ex Nihilo, from Avengers #1

BEST NEW COMIC (#1 shipped in 2012) – Fatale by Ed Brubaker

BEST LIMITED SERIES (that finished in 2012) – Memorial by Chris Roberson

BEST SINGLE ISSUE OR ONESHOT (usually under 80 pages) – CHEW #30 – this issue marks a change in the on-going series from a lighter, fun comic to something darker. It was unexpected in a comic like this, so I feel it warranted this nomination.

BEST CLIFFHANGER OR MOMENT - Batman #10, the villain behind The Court Of Owls is revealed.

BEST STORY IN A SERIES OR MULTIPLE SERIES - American Vampire: Lord of Nightmares – this is a spin-off mini series from Scott Snyder’s American Vampire main story. Perhaps it should go under Best Ltd Series, but since it is not truly a stand alone comic, I put it here

BEST SLEEPER/SURPRISE HIT – Revival, Tim Seeley & Mike Norton. Hawkeye by Matt Fraction is a close 2nd cuz, really, who expected anything from a Hawkeye book??

BEST ONGOING COMIC (doesn't have to start in 2012) – Locke & Key as well as The Unwritten – I love them both, and can’t choose! So, it’s a tie for 1st place.

BEST REPRINT COLLECTION (trade, hardcover, Absolute, Omnibus, Essential, Showcase, etc.) - Flex Mentallo: Man of Muscle Mystery
by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely

BEST ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVEL - Days of the Bagnold Summer by Joff Winterhart

BEST PUBLICATION ABOUT COMICS (Print) – San Diego Comic Con’s quarterly magazine

BEST WRITER – Ed Brubaker and Brian K. Vaughn are tied for 1st

    BEST ARTIST – Fernando Pasarin

BEST WRITER/ARTIST (individual that does both) – David Petersen, Mouse Guard

    Best Inker – Fiona Staples

    Best Colorist – Fiona Staples

BEST COVER ARTIST – Greg Capullo

BREAKTHROUGH TALENT OF 2012 (doesn't have to have their first work in 2012) – John Layman! Ever since CHEW brought him to the public spotlight, he is now doing Mars Attacks, Detective Comics, & several smaller projects for both IDW & Dark Horse.

BEST COMIC PROJECT IN ANOTHER MEDIUM (movie, TV, toys, novels, etc.) – The Walking Dead TV show as well as The Walking Dead games

MOST IMPORTANT NEWS OF 2012 – Karen Berger resignation & the end of Hellblazer, & the end of Sweet Tooth, signaling the end of an era at Vertigo. The only books worth anything that are still coming out of Vertigo are my favorite – The Unwritten – and American Vampire. They could end Fables at any time, & I’d be happy. But NO! They have to end the good stuff.

MOST ANTICIPATED FOR 2013 - Oz: The Great and Powerful. Also, Star Trek, Into Darkness

BEST REVAMP OF AN EXISTING CHARACTER OR CONCEPT – Mark Waid’s Daredevil. Also would add the 2012 re-launched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Actually, I think I will amend my "Best Sleeper" nominee from Hawkeye to Revival. I like Revival better than Hawkeye, but Hawkeye was definitely a surprise hit for me as well.

Sent my list this morning. Here's how I voted:

BEST NEW HERO (debut in 2012) – New 52 Power Girl, because a New 52 character that actually seems to enjoy his or her powers and life is a rare and wonderful thing.

BEST NEW VILLAIN (debut in 2012) - Bro, the best new villains are the Russian mobsters in Hawkeye, bro!

BEST NEW COMIC (#1 shipped in 2012) - Hawkeye

BEST LIMITED SERIES (that finished in 2012) – Star Trek: The Next Generation / Doctor Who – Assimilation2 (by virtue of being one of 2 mini-series I read all of in 2012)

BEST SINGLE ISSUE OR ONESHOT (usually under 80 pages) – Hawkeye #3, the Eliot R. Brown/OHOTMU technical drawing tribute issue.

BEST CLIFFHANGER OR MOMENT – Hulk makes Spider-Woman a sandwich, Avengers Assemble #9

BEST STORY IN A SERIES OR MULTIPLE SERIES – “The Tape,” Hawkeye #s 4 & 5

    BEST SLEEPER/SURPRISE HIT
    – Avengers Assemble

BEST ONGOING COMIC (doesn't have to start in 2012) – Hawkeye

BEST REPRINT COLLECTION (trade, hardcover, Absolute, Omnibus, Essential, Showcase, etc.) – Tarzan: The Russ Manning Years Volume 1

BEST ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVEL – Darth Vader and Son by Jeffrey Brown

BEST PUBLICATION ABOUT COMICS (Print) – Marvel Comics: The Untold Story

    BEST WRITER – Matt Fraction

BEST ARTIST – Fiona Staples. Saga didn’t turn out to be my cuppa, but that doesn’t change the fact that the artwork is gorgeous.

BEST WRITER/ARTIST (individual that does both) – Jaime Hernandez

BEST COLOR ARTIST – Fiona Staples. See above.

BEST COVER ARTIST – David Aja

BREAKTHROUGH TALENT OF 2012 (doesn't have to have their first work in 2012) – Kelly Sue DeConnick

BEST COMIC PROJECT IN ANOTHER MEDIUM (movie, TV, toys, novels, etc.) – The Amazing Spider-Man movie… despite all expectations to the contrary, I enjoyed it even more than Avengers.

MOST IMPORTANT NEWS OF 2012 – Gail Simone’s firing and rehiring, proof that the industry and fandom can work together to right a wrong.

MOST ANTICIPATED FOR 2013 – We finally start getting collections for Crockett Johnson’s outstanding comic strip, Barnaby.

BEST REVAMP OF AN EXISTING CHARACTER OR CONCEPT
    – Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel. Cool new costume, great use of her history as both a superhero and a pilot, and a long-overdue promotion.

  • I would like to suggest a new, additional, category to vote on. There is already a category called Best Comic Book in Other Media. I would like to suggest having one called Best New Comic Based on Non-Comic Material. Then comics like Adventure Time, or My Little Pony could be recognized - among others. Also, a category for Web Comics would be nice too.
  • BEST SINGLE EPISODE OR ONESHOT – Episode 1293, “Riding Out the Storm”.

LOL! Thanks! Great list! And #1293 certainly gets my vote for BEST SINGLE EPISODE!!

But, overall, it was posted with good intentions and with the spirit of fun. I guess some people "dislike" such things. Oh well.

@davidd last year was a great year david. This year it comes down to backissue or the marvel book (which I haven't read, for the record I voted for super gods last year). I've promoted twomorrows digital in the past; in the past year all i've read is is alter ego and back issue.

    '

I would like to suggest a new, additional, category to vote on... Web comics would be nice too.

good luck with that 3 years and running. still no web comics; same number of years basspro I mean Previews has won best publication

I've been lobbying for a way to have comments added to the "dislike" choice. I understand people disagreeing with opinions, but I'm baffled at people 'disliking' another's opinion.
"Dislike" strikes me as particularly harsh - especially in regard to someone's opinion on forum such as this. Unless someone is posting hate speech, being rascist or abusive, etc., it seems very intolerant to "dislike" someone's opinion. In my mind, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and should be free to express it. One can "disagree" with someone's opinion, but to "dislike" someone's opinion is silly.

I agree, @Matt, far better - & more appropriate - to "disagree". Especially when the forums do not allow for people to expand on their "dislike" or "disagree" by being able to indicate what it is they are disliking or disagreeing with. By just clicking, "dislike", it appears that the ENTIRE post is disliked. Which could be the case, but not necessarily.

On a related topic, I think it would be great to be able to identify the people who rate your comments. I understand that egos can be hurt, violence could break out, a tit-for-tat "dislike" war could start. However, it is also a good way to start and/or continue a conversation with others who took the time to read and comment on your post. At the very least, it would be nice to know who "liked" your comments. Surely no one would kill you over THAT!! lol
  • Oh, & since the subject of rating a person's comments has come up, I am new to the forums and am completely baffled by the points system.

Since someone marked my comments on CGS Best Of as "off topic" even though it is ON TOPIC because it is a "best of" and the comments are related to that, I am SURE this particular comment will also be rated as "off topic" because, in THIS case, it likely IS off topic. However, I am not sure who and/or how and/or where to ask the following questions. This seems as good a place as any:

I noticed that, when I get badges, I get points. What are the points used for? Is there some sort of contest? Do you get prizes? Is their a points goal or end-game? Is this supposed to be a competition? If so, how do you see other people's points?

I also noticed that, when someone rates your comment in a perceived negative way (ie "off topic", "dislike", or disagree"), points are taken away. Why doesn't the person posting the apparently negative comments have points deducted? Or, DOES that person get points deducted as well? Who is to say that the person who rated a comment as "dislike" isn't just a scum sucking bastard looking to hurt people and HE/SHE is the one who deserves to lose points, while his/her victim should GET points? What makes the person with the negative comments point of view more relevant than the person who received that negative comment?

Finally, what happens when a person loses all of their points (should they have had any to begin with)? Do you get kicked off the forums? Start over?

Sorry to be "off topic", but as I said, I am new here on the forum and have no understanding of the game. I look to you "old timers" to show compassion & support by filling me in so I shall be clueless no longer. Either that, or you can all jump on my shit, rate this as "off topic", "dislike", and/or "disagree" and make me lose all of my valuable points! Then I will fade away into oblivion and you won't have Court Of Owls to kick around any more. :(

But then again, maybe that's the idea.
