Hard to Watch Comic Movies

No one in this thread mentioned the two Fantastic Four movies. The movies are not exactly unwatchable (especially if you want to show a tame movie to small kids), but they sure are disappointing. At a time when special effects are stunning, even in otherwise bad movies like Transformers, the FF films basically had The Thing in a padded rubber suit and a lot of arguing and walking around.

Once I got over the fact that they weren't going to be like the Marvel line of Marvel movies, I thought they were fun kid's movies. And yes, they were goofy, but have you READ the first 30 or so issues of the FF? ^_^

Yes, but I also read a lot of issues 31-100, where the comic becomes the best galactic soap opera ever created. The Negative Zone, the Inhumans, Galactus, the whole bit -- you could make a dozen great movies with those raw materials, and with a budget. Instead, the FF movies seemed to take place on movie studio-recreated city streets. The encounter with the Silver Surfer took place in the woods, as I recall. Good grief.

I liked the padded suit and just about everything to do with FF 1 and 2. Dr Doom was probably the biggest let down for me.

I also still like Batman Forever. Whenever it's on I tune in in hopes of watching Two-face teach Riddler how to throw a punch. And even if it's not on that part I usually stick around for 30 minutes or until the credits roll.

I enjoyed Daredevil enough, and even Elektra but I don't know that I knew enough about Elektra at the time to either "get it" or "this is way of the mark".

The two that I really don't like are Ang lee's Hulk and Spider-man 3. I didn't like that Hulk just kept getting bigger and I thought Tobey Mcguire was awful when he went emo. Actually I thought Tobey Mcguire was awful the first scene of Spider-man 1 but he didn't do some kind of weird dance number down the sidewalk, so I let it slide.

Ang Lee's Hulk... uggghhh. One of his 2 big fights involved a giant poodle. All I can do is sigh.
Ohh well I've gotten one pretty entertaining Hulk movie (The Hulk) and one pretty awesome Hulk movie (The Avengers) in the past few years so I refuse to belly ache and moan about Ang Lee's version.

There is never not a good reason to belly ache and moan about that version of the Hulk.
  • I thoroughly enjoyed Ang Lee's Hulk, save for two things: the comic book styled lettering used throughout, and the fact that the Hulk's size was inhumanly large -- this is the Hulk, not Giant-Man! But I enjoyed their handling of his origin, and we got some great moments of classic Hulk-vs-the-army-in-the-desert which were right out of the 60's comics.

I never had any problem with Daredevil, and I enjoyed the first FF film without difficulty, though the second film could have been better. (I agree the second one could have been more cosmic than it was, and should have bitten the bullet where Galactus was concerned.)

Now, Steel -- that was hard to watch.

@Matt - I'm referring to the theatrical cut of DD, I've not yet been able to see the director's cut.

If you didn't like the look or acting of Daredevil standard cut, then the Director's Cut won't make a difference. If the movie's storyline is what you have issues with, then do yourself a favor and watch the Director's Cut. There's a whole subplot that really helps the main story of the movie.

It does get points for having 10x more Coolio.

Im ok with the 1st Hulk. Over thought and couldve/shouldve been better but not "bad". I just remember how much it was praised before and immediately after release. then a couple months later and ever since everone now bashes it. I remember one critic actually compared it to shakspear.
The first FF movie was ok / good enough. The second was worse but not unwatchable.
I actually like DD just fine (both cuts) despite some of the obvious problems.

I didn't think Marvel did much better with the Hulk re-make. I find Ed Norton to be annoying so I didn't warm to his Bruce Banner; Liv Tyler and William Hurt were a step down from Jennifer Connelly and Sam Elliot; and the CGI creature also seemed just as outsized, and muddy-looking, as Ang Lee's 10-foot monster. The script was just blah. It came out the same summer as Iron Man so it seemed like a filler movie, very forgettable.

I think I can add Punisher War Zone to my list. So many bad and cringe worthy moments but still watchable. The most confusing, frustrating and annoying thing is I simply cannot wrap my head around how and why its apparently so hard to make a good Punisher movie!?
