Okay, I have to limit myself here, or it will be impossible to make a list. I'm going only with animals that first appeared in comic books—not cartoons, and not comic strips.

    Anthropomorphic Top 5
Honorable Mention: Usagi Yojimbo, Pogo Possum, Sam & Max
    5. Herman Vermin (from Gregory)
    4. Scrooge McDuck
    3. Albert the Alligator (from Pogo)
    2. Stupid, Stupid Rat Creatures (from Bone)
    1. Cerebus

    Non-Anthropomorphic Top 5
Honorable Mentions: Krypto, Power Girl’s cat, Matthew the Raven (from Swamp Thing), Lockjaw
    5. Zabu (from Ka-Zar)
    4. Topo (from Aquaman) — Sorry, @JamieD, but Topo has it all over Tusky.
    3. Man-Eating Cow
    2. Lying Cat
    1. Bobo, Detective Chimp

    Overall Top 5
    5. Albert the Alligator
    4. Lying Cat
    3. Stupid, Stupid Rat Creatures
    2. Detective Chimp
    1. Cerebus

    4. Lying Cat

Oh, jeez. I would have to agree and add Lying Cat simply based on this most recent sequence from Saga (I read this and suddenly my allergies flared up, but I don't have allergies...):

  • It's a hard list to finalize -- there are so many good choices, and I already see several that were overlooked.

    Dalgoda
    Blacksad
    Captain Carrot
    Inspector LeBrock
    The Beasts Of Burden
    Howard The Duck
    Krypto
    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
    My Little Pony...
  • UGH!!!! I totally should have had Opus on my list. RRrrrrr.... I can't believe I forgot him. I also toyed with Blacksad earlier in the day and then spaced out on it during the episode.

Sam Simeon!! Has no one mentioned Sam Simeon!?

You know I love Angel and the Ape (well, mostly Bob Oksner’s art on Angel and the Ape), but not so much because of Sam, if you know what I mean.

(Still should have put him on my Honorable Mention list, though.)

I can't believe no one has mentioned Dr Dinosaur!
  • Great episode, guys! Love the top Fives (it even gets me to come out and comment, see?)

#5 (Shane, here's another you might grit your teeth over): Timber, Snake-Eyes's wolf from G.I. Joe. G.I. Joe was my gateway drug to comic collecting, so I had to include him.
    image

#4 Gorilla Grodd: My favorite superhero is the Flash, and Gorilla Grodd is one of many great villains in his rogues' gallery. Had to include this evil simian.
    image

#3 Blood: from the Richard Corben adaptation of Harlan Ellison's Vic & Blood stories, including "A Boy and his Dog." An intelligent canine with a smart-ass temperament who does what he can to keep Vic, his companion, alive. This was a prose story, and I believe a film, before it was a comic. But there are no rules in top 5, so here it is.
    image

#2 Matthew the Raven. Neil Gaiman's Sandman is probably my favorite comic series of all time. So, I gotta include Matthew. Another animal with a sarcastic tone who found redemption when Morpheus took him into his realm after he'd been a major supporting character in Swamp Thing, as Matthew Cable.
    image

#1 @Caliban beat me to it. And as he noted, 'nuff said.
