October DCBS PreOrders End 8/19 | What On Your Order?

The current Preorder Month at CGS sponsor Discount Comic Book Service is August 2015
https://www.dcbservice.com/

I've got 17 items in my monthly order cart, but I'm waiting on pulling the trigger.

Two big items that have me over my budget are:

Batman Illustrated by Neal Adams Omnibus HC (DC) *Special Discount* $37.50 (RETAIL $74.99)
Collects all three volumes of the Batman: Illustrated by Neal Adams series

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep Omnibus TP (BOOM! Studios) $25.99 (RETAIL $39.99)
Collects all 24 issues of the Eisner Award-nominated series into one complete omnibus

Any advice? Anything that you have your eye on for this order month? Any awesome specials we may be overlooking? I know I'll frequently search the "CLEARANCE" items to see if there's something I missed now at a price I just can't refuse. And then there's the "SPECIAL DISCOUNT" items that often contain a gem or two at a bargain - especially bundles, new items, and collections.

I expect the CGS crew will be perusing the latest issue of Previews in the coming days. That often alters my order somewhat.

I've got a question for manga readers. Is Planetes any good? Darkhorse has an omnibus of it this month.

Never read it, so I can't really say for sure.

Here's my order as it stands right now. Bound to be some changes prior to the cut-off.

    Manga Mayhem
Tokyo Esp GN Vol 01 - Another potential dropper, but Vertical rarely lets me down.
So I Cant Play H GN Vol 03 - This one surprised me. Fanservice heavy as hell, but it actually has a plot behind it. Who knew? :)
    Sacred Blacksmith GN Vol 09
Astro Boy Omnibus TP Vol 02 - Because Tezuka.
Appleseed Alpha GN Vol 01 - They had me at Appleseed. :)
Alice In Murderland GN Vol 02 (MR)
My Love Story GN Vol 06
Mushoku Tensei Jobless Reincarnation GN Vol 01 - Prime candidate for the drop pile. It sounds good but I don't know much about it. May research.
Kill La Kill GN Vol 02 (of 3)

    Trades of Western Origin

Ms Marvel TP Vol 04 - Page for page one of the best books Marvel's put out.
Harley Quinn HC Vol 03 Kiss Kiss Bang Stab
Copperhead TP Vol 02 - Scott Godlewski (the artist) is a local here so I like supporting him. Helps that this book is DAMN good!
Batman 66 HC Vol 04 - Because duh!
Scarlett Couture HC (MR) - Des Taylor draws it, I will buy it. I have the singles of this but I'm double-dipping the trade because I know there'll be extras in there.

    Singles
Daughters of The Oracle #4 Curse of The Ragdoll (MR)
I Hate Fairyland #1 (MR) - How can I NOT buy this? :)
    Omega Men #5

My order looks like this right now:

Debbie's Inferno One-Shot - I'm always interested in psychological and offbeat stories and the fact that this is a one-shot makes it even more appealing since there's no further commitment involved.

Drawn Onward - I'm intrigued to see if the palindrome storytelling device employed by the writer/artist in this tale of obsession and desire will be as interesting as the synopsis makes it appear.

    Grant Morrison's 18 Days #4

Harrow County #6 - This is one of the best horror comics on the shelf right now. I'll be ordering this as long as Bunn keeps writing it.

    The Humans #8

Junji Ito's Cat Diary: Yon & Mu GN - I actually found myself in a similar situation to the one described in the synopsis of this book with a girl I dated many years ago except I was the one moving in to her house and she owned the cats. This looks like a fun story and perhaps one I will be able to relate to.

Justice League 3001 #5 - DeMatteis is my favorite writer so I'll buy and read anything he writes. This book reminds me why every month.

Owly & Wormy: Bright Lights And Starry Nights! HC - ...don't judge me...

Xoc: The Story Of A Great White - I really dig anything involving sharks or dinosaurs. I also enjoy stories about journeys. This meets both of those criteria. Also, the art looks pretty cool.

Not even positively? Andy is a super-nice guy and a great cartoonist. I have some of his books too.

Any recommendations on other books? I really loved the description of this in the most recent Previews and I'll always be a kid at heart, so books like these are right up my alley.

Do you mean other Owly books, or other Kid/YA books? The Owly books are pretty consistent. If you like one, you'll like ’em all. Oh, and in case you haven't seen them before, there is no dialogue. Well, they speak to each other in iconography rather than words.

Originally when I typed that I was thinking of other books by the same writer/artist. However, if you have any recommendations on other Kid/YA books, I'd be very interested in those as well.

I generally gravitate toward anything involving animals as protagonists. My favorite book is Watership Down and I've enjoyed the early Redwall novels quite a bit. I've also enjoyed the tales of Beatrix Potter and the Winnie The Pooh stories.

If any of that is at all helpful, I'd very much appreciate some recommendations.

    I'll give you a few.
Stuff of Legend - my wife who doesn't read comics loves this series. From what I've gathered from her its about a boys toys having to save him from the boogie man

Mouse Guard - is one of my all time favorite book series. David Peterson created an animal world in which the mice are protected by the mouse guard. Its beautiful and very similar to redwall.

Dragon Puncher - is a ridiculous story about a cat named Dragon Puncher (he fights monsters) and a small incompetent hanger on. There are two Dragon Puncher books and a recent Dragon Puncher meets Johnny Boo (the best little ghost).

Yeah, Owly is all Andy does, so there are no other recommendations for him I can give. But I will second the recommendations for Stuff of Legend and Mouse Guard—two outstanding books, and both in the same square format. Both are kid-of-a-certain-age-friendly, but decidedly enjoyable for adults as well. Stuff of Legend has the look of Pooh and Potter (the artist does great E.H. Shepard-style sketches, where he Pooh-ifies superheroes—Google Charles Paul Wilson III), but with a darker edge and violence along the lines of Watership Down.

Also, Wild’s End. It's kind of a mash-up of War of the Worlds and The Wind and the Willows. A second miniseries is about to launch, and it will be more of an Invasion of the Body Snatchers type of story, picking up where the first miniseries ended.

In case you don't know, there's a graphic novel adaptation of Redwall by my friend Bret Blevins, which is gorgeous.

I'll also recommend the Abominable Charles Christopher web comic (also available in book form). Beautiful, beautiful stuff.

That's about it as far as animal protagonists. I assume you've read We3 and Pride of Baghdad. If not check those out.

Other stuff: Zita the Spacegirl (three books now, I think), Crogan’s Adventures (three books so far), Cleopatra in Space (one book, but more coming), American Born Chinese, Battling Boy, Lumberjanes (ongoing comic), Ninjasaur. That should get you started.

I second American Born Chinese, and raise you
Boxers & Saints - a coming of age story that takes place during the Boxer Rebellion in China. One focuses on a young girl involved with the Boxers, and the other is about a young boy who is having to deal with being a Christian during the Rebellion. They are by the same guy that wrote American Born Chinese and both are very good.

I'll also second Crogan Adventures. These are a series of small graphic novels about members of the Crogan family. Oni has started releasing color versions of these books now.

    Back To The Future #1
    I Hate Fairyland #1
    Captain America: White #3
    Doctor Strange #1
    Infinity Gauntlet #5

    Star Wars #11

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep Omnibus
  • mwhitt80mwhitt80 Posts: 4,638
One more off the top of my head.

Old City Blues - This is a great YA series (I think its a web comic) in the vein of Blade Runner with robot ninjas. It looks super cool and is a fun story. Boom/Archia has put out 2 volumes so far.
  • fredzillafredzilla Posts: 2,131
Korgi is also a great animal led book with beautiful art. I used a FCBD story from it to use in my classroom last year. No words, but gorgeous art.

I've got Boxers & Saints on my shelf, just haven't had time to read them yet. Oh, and he's writing Superman now, and wrote last year’s The Shadow Hero (with art by one of my faves, Sonny Liew), which isn't YA, but is still quite good.

Any other recommendations worth considering on your DCBS order form for October?

Any other recommendations worth considering on your DCBS order form for October?

I still order everything from my local shop, the one in which I worked back when I was in college. But outside of my normal list, a couple of things in Previews caught my eye:

I'm on the I Hate Fairyland and Dr. Strange trains for at least the first three or four issues. Both look fun.

Twilight Children is a no-brainer. Gilbert Hernandez and Darwyn Cooke? I'm there.

Harrow County vol. 1 tpb: I read the first issue, and it was good. It's Cullen Bunn, whose work I generally like, and Tyler Crook, whose work I love, doing fully painted art. It's has more of a ghost story/folk lore type of feel than straight-up horror.

Battling Boy: Fall of the House of West: It's the second Aurora West book, so Pope is only co-writing and not drawing it, but I actually liked the first Aurora West book better than the first Battling Boy book.

The new Karnak series looks like it might be interesting. I'll probably try out the first issue or two.

Paper Girls looks cool, but I'm probably going to wait on the trade for that, as I do with most of the Image books I get.

And speaking of kids' books, Camp Midnight looks interesting, but I'll wait to see what people think before buying. Gotta draw the line somewhere.

Batman by Neal Adams Omnibus. I cannot wait for this! Apparently it's going to retain the original coloring for those old issues. And "Batman Odyssey" was AWESOME! Yes, it was ridiculous. Yes, there were passages of dialogue and monologue in there that were baffling, bewildering, and flat-out awful. But that's part of the charm!

As mentioned in the recent CGS Previews episode, I have decided to keep this in my current order. Just cannot pass it up. No telling what it will be selling for in secondary markets a year from now.

I could be mistaken, but I think today's deadline is for being able to edit (remove items) from your order. You can still add items to it for several days.
