Perhaps my favorite introduction to a companion. ;) Truth be told, I'm all that fond of the companions that follow the 2nd Romana. Tegan and Peri are kind of the same character. They're equally physically attractive and whiny. Peri isn't as bitchy as Tegan, but the ridiculous diaper sized shorts she wears don't compare to Tegan wearing Sheena Easton's clothes. Adric, Mel, and Ace just annoy me. Adric because he's always trying to prove himself. Mel because she's far to earnest and can shatter glass when she screams. And, Ace just because she ace.
Food guru Brown recently launched a weekly podcast. His latest episode (episode no. 5) features a segment on baking perfect biscuits, and his proposal for hypothetical Doctor Who script. Good stuff.
A lot of folks are saying it's gonna be Peter Capaldi, who would be an awesome pick, but remember that everyone as 100% certain that 11 was going to be Patterson Joseph right up until the point they announced Matt Smith, so as with all Who rumors, take it with a boulder-sized grain of salt until it's official.

If so, he'd be tied with Hartnell for oldest.
I'm not sure what surprises me more - that they might actually hire someone that old today, or that Hartnell was only 55 when he started. Seriously, he looks 70. And not even a healthy 70.
It would be interesting casting, but I'll believe it when I see it. By "older", I'd assumed the BBC would go with someone 40-45. Heck, even mid 30s would be older after Matt Smith.
Peter Capaldi may have emgerged as a sudden favorite almost overnight, but I feel like this is misdirection on the part of the production team. What better way to surprise people than to feed the fans' expectations first. I'm still kinda hoping for Damien Molony, but it almost doesn't matter because they haven't gotten it wrong yet.
An older Doctor would be an interesting change of pace, but my gut says they will continue to skew younger to mantain the faux sexual tension between the Doctor and his female companion. Nobody really wants to see a hot young girl travel around with her uncle.
In the coarse of my Who-a-thon I've decided to skip the Trial of the Timelord. I've watched those episodes fairly recently and don't want to see them again. I've picked up with Sylvester McCoy's initial episode, Time and the Rani.
The time has come for an American actor to take over the lead role on Doctor Who.
Just as Superman ("truth, justice, and the American way") as now been immortalized by an Englishman, it’s time for the British icon to be reinterpreted by one of us.
However, having the Doctor speak with an America accent would just be silly. Henry Cavill used an American accent for the Man of Steel and whatever American takes over as the Doctor should use an impeccable English accent. With that in mind, I think the best choice would be Michael McKean reprising his This Is Spinal Täp role of David St. Hubbins as the Doctor.
Interesting. The BBC has a blog entry that includes a potentially revealing title, but the entry contains no content. Is this a red herring or did they tip their hat in regards to the next Doctor's identity?

I give them credit for going with a Doctor that isn't another young, good-looking-in-a-quirky-way guy. Going with a man Capaldi's age is actually sort of punk rock in the TV world.
Also, I didn't know the name when I first heard it, but as soon as I saw his face I thought, "That guy from In the Loop!" He is fantastic in that movie. And even though I don't watch Dr. Who, I might give his incarnation a try. It may be something of a Dr. Who that is an acerbic, older John Constantine type. We'll see.

Thought you might be interested in this. It's the first photo from the BBC drama which will tell the story of the beginnings of Doctor Who as part of the show's 50th anniversary. The gentleman playing William Hartnell is David Bradley from the Harry Potter films. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/doctor-who/10171886/First-look-David-Bradley-as-William-Hartnell.html

Mel. My GOD that woman can scream.
Screw all these "professional" actors.
I'm just gonna cast myself as the next Doctor.

English accent? Check. Wacky persona? Check. Colorful fashion sense? Check. Philosophical outlook? Check.
And he goes to 11.
