Sidenote: Charlton had some awful lettering starting in the mid-’50s using their Vari-Typer instead of hand-lettering, but that first word balloon may be the worst example of typesetting I’ve ever seen.
I was a graphic artist for 20 years and, yes, it makes me cringe. Even today, with indie creators, the focus is on the writing and art but they forget the word balloons are an art form in its self.
First day back for teaching today. Aaaah, teenagers....
This one is probably penciled and inked by Archie comics legend Samm Schwartz. The publisher, Tower Comics, was founded and published by Harry Shorten, a former writer/editor (and co-creator of most of the MLJ superheroes) at Archie. Shorten brought in Schwartz as not just an artist, but also to be the editor of all the books which Wally Wood was not in charge of. Schwartz has a famous quote: “Whenever in doubt, silhouette”—much of like Wally Wood’s snappier line, “When in doubt, black it out.” I wonder which used it first?

First day back with the my students after having a week off for the hurricane. Luckily our area didn't take any heavy damage it's good to get back into the routine, we started school almost a month ago.
So Tower wasn't part of Archie? For some reason, I got it in my head that they were the Christian comics wing of Archie Comics.
You’re thinking of Spire Christian Comics. And they weren’t a wing of Archie either, but rather an independent company. Al Hartley, who was drawing for Archie at the time, helped launch Spire, and was able to use his connections at Archie to secure a license for Spire to use the characters.
Tower was the publisher of Wally Wood’s T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents line of superhero books, among other things.

Who’s brilliant idea was it to color the first “O” in colour such a dark color? And how many times in this post can I write the word color?
Pencils and inks by Ron Wilson and Frank Giacoia respectively.
I like those 70s Marvel UK books. Since they carved up the US stories for weekly formats, they often needed new art to re-introduce the story. So just when I thought I knew my Man Called Nova run, you find some extras art. I prefer seeing the art in black and white too.
Ever wonder what happened to Gloria? Gloria couldn't keep "the secret". So Gloria....went away....faster than Chuck Cunningham. Watch out for Ma Kent and the arsenic....
