Also approved: - Tackling players on the opposing team may result in a penalty. - Singling out the quarterback by the defensive rushing squad may result in loss of downs for the defensive team. - Any player who forcibly tackles another player will have a letter written home to his parents which must be signed and returned to the commissioner's office before that player may return to regular season play. - Anyone who gets bruised as the result of a tackle will get a band-aid and a kiss on the forehead from Commissioner Goodell before play may resume.
At this point Mr. Payton and Mr. Williams were escorted from the conference room and asked not to return. :)
Kudos to Goodell for not backing down on the suspensions. Kudos again for his willingness to re-examine the fines and loss of draft picks depending on how things go.
There are hints Brees may be close to a long-term deal with the Saints. Keeping my fingers crossed. In the sea of crap (that we admittedly made for ourselves) it'd be nice to have some good news for a change.
Sean Payton got a hefty one-year suspension from the NFL and when he appealed that suspension to Roger Goodell, he got the Heisman from the commissioner. So we knew 2012 wouldn't be a fun year for Payton.
But according to a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN, it's worse than imagined: Payton is "not allowed to have any contact with the Saints organization or anyone around the NFL."
Additionally, any contact with coaching friends or members of the Saints organization must be reported to league executive Ray Anderson, which is an interesting little application of the honor code when it comes to Payton's suspension.
Payton's suspension begins Monday and ends in February, following the Super Bowl. So, if Payton does, say, bump into Mickey Loomis at Bed, Bath and Beyond on a Saturday in May, he has to ring up Anderson and self-report a violation of his suspension.
The obvious conundrum for Payton is this: he could break the honor code and keep his fingerprints on the 2012 Saints. And he could conceivably get away with it. But (in the hypothetical that he attempted to do so) if he got caught without self-reporting these violations, he might be in big trouble when reinstatement time rolls around.
Of course, from a practical standpoint, it's an absolute disaster: the people in the Saints organization and the NFL are, one assumes, his circle of friends. Surely he has compatriots outside the game, but if he wants to get dinner with a good friend in the Saints organization, it's unlikely the NFL would look on too kindly.
If I were Sean I'd just pack up the plantation for a year and head to the Bahamas.
There's also been talk of making him a TV analyst for football games, but I'm guessing this ruling might put the kibosh on that. Maybe not, though...if he's an NBC employee he's not an NFL employee, and they can't really stop him from turning on a TV and watching the games. Who knows?
My focus is still on them getting Brees back in uniform for at least a five-year contract.
Don't care about the whole Bounty situation and would rather the league dump instant replay entirely. If I could change anything it would be that the ground can cause fumbles and that players have to get the ball into the end zone. Kind of like how Rugby does it. I don't like the "run at the pylon and stick the ball over the goal line as you run out of bounds" play.
I have written an open letter to Saints owner Tom Benson, asking him to fire everyone, with the exception of Drew Brees and Jimmy Graham. It's really the only way.
Loomis was a grade-A diddlyboob the moment he came out and said Drew Brees was an "average" quarterback as a reason why they were putting the franchise tag on him. I've been begging them to fire him ever since. I may get my wish. Hell, if Benson's willing to put his own granddaughter on suspension, he should have no problem getting rid of Loomis.
Fortunately those seasons he was spying were 2001-2004. No doubt he stopped once Belecheat got caught.
I know I should never revel in another team's misery, and I try not to. BUT..... The Saints are getting invesigated by the FBI and the State Police. Let me repeat THE FBI. This offseason has been like Christmas to a Falcons fan. Let us recap.
Drew Brees is unhappy (even though I know he's getting a contract for real) The Saints Bounties The Saints illegally wiretapping opponents and the sweet-sweet icing on the cake and my favorite off-season sports story Bobby Petrino
I do hearken back to the days when we were the "Clown Princes of Football" and a constant underdog. That said, I really really really really hope Loomis is out.
TS Take heart that the Saints downfall is a very distant second to Boobie Petrino's fall from grace. Really Petrino is a double glee (like a double rainbow) he is the head coach of conference rival and he screwed over the Falcons. Triple glee, the Petrino incedent also has to irritate University of Arkansas grad (and the guy that NFL never went after for tampering when Petrino left) Jerry Jones. Triple Glee is greater than the Saints fall.
Apparently Loomis must have compromising pictures of Benson or something because he's going to stand by him, and his now counter-suing ESPN to cite their source or face libel charges.
Rrrghh....where's that paper bag I was wearing over my head back in the 80s and 90s? :)
They finally got around to handing out suspensions to the players:
Vilma (Saints) - Out for the season. Not surprising. He was the ringleader and he will be definitely missed this season. Hargrove (Packers) - Eight games. He's the guy that lied/covered up to the original investigators. Will Smith (Saints) - Four games. Assisted Vilma. Fujita (Browns) - Three games.
So not as horrible as it could have been considering two of the players are on other teams now. Vilma will definitely be missed though.
Now will you people focus on getting Brees into a long-term contract?
Former Chargers star Junior Seau has been found dead at his home from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, Oceanside, Ca., police have confirmed.
Seau, 43, was a 12-time Pro Bowler and a six-time All Pro who most likely is a Hall of Famer. He retired after the 2009 season following a 20-year career.
In 2010, he was involved in a car accident after driving off a cliff. Earlier in the day, he had been arrested on a domestic violence charge.
Seau told police he had fallen asleep at the wheel of his car and had not tried to commit suicide.
"Everyone at the Chargers is in complete shock and disbelief right now," the Chargers said in a statement. "We ask everyone to stop what they're doing and send their prayers to Junior and his family."
The reported death of Seau draws comparisons to Dave Duerson. While it's too early to know whether Seau had similar intentions, Duerson purposefully shot himself in the chest in order to preserve his head for research. The former Bears standout suffered multiple concussions while playing in the league.
Before a scheduled news conference held by the Oceanside, Ca., police, Seau's clearly-emotional mother made a statement. "Show your love to my son. I don't understand who do this to my son. I pray to God, take me. Leave my son. But it's too late."
In a brief statement, police chief Frank McCoy said Seau's girlfriend found him unconscious at 9:35 local time and called 911. Police found him in a bedroom, and life-saving efforts were performed. There was a handgun found near the body, and police are investigating the incident as a suicide.
“This is still a very fluid situation," McCoy said. "Our investigators are still continuing their investigation in this matter."
The NFL should have some kind of "transition" therapy for the end of players careers. Every former player I've heard talks about how stark and final that time is. Even guys that are grounded in faith and have a strong family have serious problems adjusting to their new life.
not so close.. Right now its moved out of the House with 105 mil. added for the Vikes to pony up, while the Senate is only adding 25 mil. for the Team to contribute, AND thats on top of the 450+ mil. the Vikes already committed to. It will go a committee to hash out the details, but I still see this as 50/50.
I just want a light-rail system to take us to the Twin Cities and the game.

The good news keeps on coming. Belacheat needs to take lessons

That 1994 Chargers team has had a rough go. Junior's the 8th guy down, more if you count family members.
