Currently I'm not reading any comics from IDW, and John Carter: The End was the first thing I've read from Dynamite in at least three or four years.

    Your thoughts on JC:TE?

Still have the last two issues sitting in my pile to read, but I've liked it so far.

And I was wrong. It was only two years ago when I got their Captain Victory miniseries, which was outstanding. Honestly, I'd forgotten it was a Dynamite series, as it was so unlike anything else they've published. Before that it was probably two or three years since I'd read anything from Dynamite.

Same. I need to finish it before I weigh in as well. I like the art though.

Anyone ever get into any trouble with payday loans and know the best way to get out from under them?

Are there good, legit places one can go to consolidate the debt, even if you have crappy credit?

I went looking for the music video for Lighter Shade of Pale. Given his role in the video, it seems like an appropriate send off. Alas, the video seems to have been taken down everywhere.

I'd add Missouri Breaks (a downright bizarre western - like High Plains Drifter odd) , and Escape from New York.

Also, as a product of the 80's, his sit down under the tree conversation with Ducky in Pretty in Pink was an important part of recovering from a few painful crushes many years ago.

Add Wild at Heart to that list.

So this should help improve ratings and ticket sales.

JJ Watts' team won their game against the Bengals this same week that he totaled $37 million raised for Hurricane Harvey relief, but the NFL Players Association named an unemployed political activist as their choice for Week 1 MVP in the NFL.

    No, I'm not kidding: http://goo.gl/nGFH1T

The Community MVP, which is the same award Kap won this week, has nothing to do with play on the field. It has everything to do with community service, and both Watts and Kap have been doing outstanding work in that area.

For anyone interested, here’s the link to Watts, and the link to Kap.

Here’s the NFLPA description of the award:
Using their ultra-super powers for good, NFL players around the league have dedicated their lives to protecting their communities and saving the world. When they’re not scoring touchdowns or tackling for loss, NFL players are finding ways to serve their hometowns and team cities – even during the season when time off the field is very limited. Because of this, each week during the regular season, the NFLPA #CommunityMVP program recognizes one player who has demonstrated a commitment to making a positive impact in his community. The weekly Community MVP winners will also become eligible for the annual Byron “Whizzer” White (BWW) Award, which is the highest honor that the NFLPA can bestow upon a player.

Hmm. A bit strange that Kaepernick would be selected since he's not on a team this year, and hence, not a player. Should we presume that this means no one else on an active NFL roster has been doing any community service...?

The NFLPA states on their website that any dues-paying member is eligible as long as they are on a roster or are actively seeking a contract.

Still, the selection is very strange, nonetheless. Kind of sends a message I wouldn't think the NFL would be enthusiastic to send in the current climate.

I don't think it’s strange at all. The NFLPA is about representing its members—all its members. And, yes, I'm sure the selection wasn’t just about celebrating the charity work of Kaepernick. It was also to remind the NFL owners that one of its members is without a contract, and to remind fans that Kaepernick is out there putting his money and, more importantly, his time where his mouth is (or perhaps, where his knee is). That’s the NFLPA’s job.

I'm sure the NFL owners are trying their hardest to ignore the selection. I’m sure they’d prefer that Kaepernick just fade into the background and not be heard from again. The NHLPA is not concerned about what the owners want, but about how to get the most it can for its members.

As for lower ratings and emptier stadiums, there are any number of reasons for it. I think oversatuation is a big component. They should never have added Thursday night games. Most of the ad buyers seem to think that’s the biggest reason for the drop. Then there are the cord-cutters, the significant drop in younger viewership (a 40% drop in teen and early 20-something viewers) likely due to them being more interested in other things, the “No Fun League” tag (something which the NBA is using to its advantage), and, yes, the protesters, as well as a dozen other things. I stopped watching the NFL on a regular basis back in the mid-’80s because it was getting boring and taking too long. I'm beginning to think I was just ahead of the curve. ;)

Make that “Noted Film Historian”, which is technically accurate since you all appear in the liner notes of the DVD jacket. You really have to juice up your CV these days.

I'm impressed how thoroughly you're able to put a happy face on it,Eric. Well done.

What I think a lot of people don't know about Mr. Kaepernick is that he remains a free agent not only because his national anthem-kneeling routine is VERY unpopular (and is cited in the CBS link above as one reason for the massive NFL ratings drop this year), but he also opted out of his contract with the 49ers, making him a free agent in the first place.

Some have speculated he was going to be cut anyways due to the 49ers finishing 2–14 for 2016/2017 - their worst since 2004, and the worst home record in franchise history (not including the strike shortened 1982 season - which you may remember). As starting QB, his record was 1-10, so it was probably likely that he was going to be cut. I surmise that with a record like that, and the distraction he brings with his political stance, it's really no wonder he's still unsigned.

With that in mind, this appears to be more of a political pick for NFLPA, which is why it was so notable. Maybe next week they'll recognize active players like Ezekiel Elliott of the Cowboys or Emmanuel Sanders of the Broncos who are helping with the hurricane relief organizations as well.

Not putting a happy face on it, just calling it for what it is. That’s how the NFLPA has operated for years, so why change now? I would not be surprised at all if Elliott gets some kind of recognition by the NFLPA at some point this season. It went after the woman who accused him of rape, so it has already shown it will tow the line for him, as it does for all its players. Again, not putting a happy face on it, not saying they’re right or wrong for doing so, just stating what the NFLPA does.

The sad part of all this is, as mediocre a QB as Kap is/was, he was still statistically better in the analyitics department than about ten other starters last season. Maybe that has something to do with the ratings, too? Are there even five QBs in the league—a league which has become completely reliant on the QB position—this season who will be remembered as greats?

Listening to a sports podcast, actual topic is it time for the Saints to trade Drew Brees since they are going to be 3/4 in South again and get some value of the sinking ship.
