After a couple of years, today I finally obtained the last volume I needed to complete the 13 volume DC Archives Legion of Super Heroes set.
I'm only at 1-4 and 6-7 so far. Maybe one day, though the price on vol 5 is, every time I look at it, utterly absurd.
Five and Eight are the tough ones to get. I have seen eight go for around 5 times the cover price. I got lucky and only paid 10 dollars over. I think I paid almost double for Five. Nearly all of the rest of the 13 I was able to obtain below cover price, a few half off cover price. So overall it has balanced out well.
After seeing your earlier post, I took a look for 5 - cheapest one was about $100 and double that now that I've looked for 8.
What's frustrating is that if you look at them on the DCcomics website, they say that they're available and the link takes you to a comic shop locater. If they're OOP, the publisher has no business saying that they're available.
I knew i wanted all of them but I made rules for myself about how to get them. I would not pay more than double cover price for any single one and overall I would try to keep it to around no greater than 25% over cover price for all 13. DCBS and one of my LCS did have several for 50% off whiched helped. I think I got another couple off of cheaptrades.com for 60% off. I found couple more in another LCS for cover price. 5,8, and i think either 6 or 9 were the only ones I went over cover price.
I'm currently at about 40% off cover but I can neither float or justify that kind of cost for a single book.
Overall I stayed under my budget goal but i had to wait a long time to get vol 8. It was usually around $250 and that is insane. I think it took me 8 months to find a lower priced one.

I get where you're coming from. I'm limited to about $50 per month all in so I can occasionally swing a 40% off instock trades order but even averaging it out, I'm not getting any other books for a couple of months to say nothing of explaining the out of budget number and much smaller box.
Maybe one day I'll find someone that isn't playing the arbitrage game with them.
Pretty sure that the Archive secondary market is more like the second one from the right - the blue one has too gentle of a transition from the point back.
Got to have a little "Frustrate the Fred" comic trivia in class today with an eighth grade boy. So fun to see someone his age into comics. He was all over it with his Spider-Man knowledge. Doesn't like the current Slott stuff, but once I convinced him Peter was coming back (uh... spoilers?) he got excited about reading new ASM. High five!
anybody else get the I is for Image preview comic in their DCBS shipment this month? I initially tossed it aside but when i did start to flip through it it...a lot of that upcoming stuff grabbed my attention. I may be picking up a lot more image love in the future.

Green Lantern Day everyone! 2/8/14! How are you celebrating. I will be doing so by actively not thinking about the Ryan Reynolds movie, and finishing reading the Geoff johns run that's been sitting on my desk
