If there’s a popular song out there, more than likely there’s a bluegrass cover of it. And there’s a pretty good chance it’s Iron Horse doing the cover; they’ve done a ton of them.
I'm not much for the trend of bluegrass covers of rock songs, a là the Pickin’ On... records. I've listened to many of them, and I can count on one hand the number of them that actually worked well. Trampled by Turtles does a really nice version of Arcade Fire’s “Rebellion (Lies)”.
This one starts out nicely, but they lost me when they went into high tempo. Personally, I think their tempo change works against the mood the lyrics are trying to establish.
Star Trek and Tron aren’t two things that typically go together, but filmmaker Patrick Collins recently mashed the pair together in a short film called Star Trek: Legacy.
In this 22-minute film, he recut Star Trek: The Motion Picture and set it to Daft Punk’s fantastic score from Tron: Legacy. The resulting film works better than it sounds on paper, and makes for a really cool viewing experience.
Neill Blomkamp is known for depictions of extraterrestrial warfare, like in District 9 and Elysium. This latest short features a post-apocalyptic world where humans and otherworldly creatures battle over their entwined fates. And in keeping with sci-fi tradition, the queen of alien ass-kicking leads a group of people who have planned a rebellion against the creatures.
Post deleted (sorry, glitch). A bunch of old posts that originally didn't process properly decided to go through multiple times at a much later date. Weird.
Watching Wes Anderson's brilliant "melancomedy" Rushmore scored by the musical stylings of Blink-182, Smash Mouth, and all of those pop-rock bands of the late 90s—Third Eye Blind—is just sacrilege, or merely annoying, or just not something I can handle in this heat.
