I am looking forward to this movie but my wife and son are really excited to see this. I am really happy for this them. My son thinks Wonder Woman is more of bad-ass than Superman and Batman. Then again its Gal Gadot and he's 13.
I hate saying this, but the stuff I've been reading seems to be confirming my initial theory on this movie. Nothing further here, as I cannot confirm the information.
To point toward my theory, I will say, when Suicide Squad was first announced, I theorized it'd try to ride the coattails of GotG. By the first trailer, it was apparent what playbook they were using for SS. The more teasers & trailers I saw the more I thought my theory was accurate.
I have only seen about 60% of Suicide Squad and it appeared they used less of GotG as I thought. Whenever I get around to watching the other 40%, I might see differently.
Excellent. Hopefully this is a good sign for more female led superhero movies from the Big 2. It illustrates you don't need a household name actress either.
It does seem weird that Wonder Woman has that kind of opening with the "under marketing" it got verses Suicide Squad & BvS:DoJ!
It was extremely good. It gave me hope that the other DC movies will be good, hopefully with the overwhelming success of this movie, the other movies take notes and follow suit?
And I really really hope that the Justice League movie is as good as this was. If they can pull that off? Then I think everything else will start to fall into place.

I'm not surprised by this response at all. Wonder Woman has been a household name and a feminist icon for decades. In spite of our experience as comic book fans, the majority of the movie going audience has never heard of Harley Quinn or the Suicide Squad. And Batman and Superman have each had no less than 5 other feature films about them already. A Wonder Woman movie was long overdue and audiences have been hungry for it. It's about time and I hope it does great.
So, Wonder Woman has been getting all this praise for a variety of reasons. One of which is about Patty Jenkins. Is it a chicken & the egg type question to wonder if it's more about the character the movie was based then the female director or "the strong feminist" movement?
If this movie was about a brand new female superhero (or even a c-lister), would it be doing the same numbers?

How many multiple viewers went to see the movie again because it was directed by a female or starred a female verse because of the character itself?
Conversely, Rough Night (starring my girl Scarlett) was directed by a female, starred mostly females, but bombed & forgotten.
I mean, of course the fact that the character is a pop culture icon is a huge part of the success. And as much of a star as Johansson is, there is just no comparison to be made between a big superhero franchise movie and an R-rated comedy that "follows a bachelorette party that goes wrong after a male stripper dies", you know what I mean? Those movies are, from the start, very different products.
As far as whether people are seeing WW for WW, or for the director, I don't think there would be any way to parse the two. I think this is the movie that got made, Jenkins directed it, and it is hugely successful. Those are the facts we have.
To try to figure out the what ifs, we would need a counter-factual universe where the same script, with the same cast and producers, was directed by a man instead, to be able to assess how much the specific director (or the gender of the director) was a part of the success.
I agree with @David_D. And I would posit that the Wonder Woman character has a certain cache and worldwide recognition that gave this movie a boost. And the sex of the director matters far, FAR less than the script and the execution. The world was ready for an all-ages, family friendly WW movie and all WB had to do was not to screw up the execution. The fact that the movie was helmed by a capable woman is simply icing on the cake and not instrumental to the film's BO success.
Have some people who want to "defeat the patriarchy" possibly seen this movie multiple times in order to make a statement? Maybe. But I believe it is far more likely that comic geeks and WW fans have seen this movie multiple times just because they enjoyed it that much.
I have some agreement with Cameron's comments. Looks like I'm not the only one who think people jumped ugly on a differing opinion (rather a different view then the general narrative)
I've stated this before, but I haven't lost a moment of sleep over a "women's only" screening of Wonder Woman. I'm more fascinated by the hypocrisy of it. Apparently, they went as far as only having female employees for those screenings.
The article here is blah, but I had to chuckle at some of the comments that followed. Apparently, those dudes who had issues with it are "whiners". And one dude who doesn't care about the movie, character, or anti-discriminatory laws decided to jump into the corral to blast those "alt-right people".
I’m interested to see what Wiig does with the role. Unlike this group, I don’t want the portrayal to be similar to Batman Forever’s Riddler just because a comedic actor is playing the character. Kent & Diana are still the brightest stars in the DCEU...don’t sully them now.

I'm pretty excited myself. Hope the film lives up to their expectations.
And with the negative reviews I just sampled at the link boasting pull-quotes like ones below, I think the movie is going to do just fine.

Interesting the theatre chain has gone from mocking the issue to throwing out a settlement offer. Even though they're only copies of the DVD.
