I loved the Target novelizations as a kid - before the home video boom took off, they were the only way to revisit older stories besides waiting the year or two for the local PBS station to cycle through the whole run. But, yes, nomenclature was not always their strong point, and these are not only hilarious but completely true to form!
One of my favorite online discoveries was a torrent containing all the Target novelizations in ebook form. This was before they eventually started releasing some of them in that format, and they were all long out of print, so I had no qualms about downloading it.
They were all quick, fun, cheap reads, and surprisingly most bookstores carried a decent supply of them. I remember going on vacation with my family and even finding some in a truckstop.
I loved the covers by Chris Achilleos, but didn't care so much for the photo covers and later more simple painted ones, especially the ones that left the Doctor off. Seriously, if you ever see the one for Enemy of the World, with all the images they could use, the one they went with is so generic that even as I look at it I can't relate it to anything I saw when watching the story a few months ago.
It is funny to imagine how they would have handled the more simple, minimalist titles of New Who in doing those novelizations today.
It's crazy how rapidly our little podcast is growing. Our Facebook page received over 625 more likes this past week alone.
For those of you holding out for the color (colour) Doctor Who episodes, that time is nearly upon us. Next week we begin our 3rd Doctor coverage, and to usher in this new era we've updated our logo accordingly.
In addition to reviewing Spearhead From Space, next week we're also going to talk about The Avengers - the BBC's Avengers that is. Specifically, series 5 episode 1 From Venus With Love for it features a guest stint by none other than Jon Pertwee. And get this, he plays a character named "Brigadier Whitehead".
U.S. residents can watch the episode for free on HULU (see link below).
Failing integrated video RAM on my Mac laptop prompted me to dust off an old PC tower running Windows Xp. The PC is ancient, but with RAM being $6/GB on Amazon, it didn't take much effort on my end to upgrade it to the point where I could simultaneously run the Skype and Audacity programs I use to record the podcast. After upgrading the PC, I decided to give a couple of its default desktop images an overhaul as well.
Happy birthday, Carole Ann Ford - and many happy returns.
“One day I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine.”
Once again, Sean Pertwee (Alfred on Gotham, and son of 3rd Doctor actor Jon Pertwee) has posted a photo of him dressed as his famous father, and it’s amazing!
(Note: the original photo was a tad dark, so I brightened it.)

That's so cool! They should make a special featuring Sean Pertwee playing John Pertwee playing the third Doctor. Like they did with Paul McGann.
I know there are some who might find it tacky or disrespectful to cast another actor as a past Doctor, but I have no problem with it when the original actor is deceased. I'd love to see David Bradley actually play the First Doctor in a story, and although I don't think Sean Pertwee could fully capture what his father did with the role, it's certainly closer than we could get otherwise.
It's a shame Patrick Troughton's sons look a little too big for the role. They've got the voice down, I just don't think I would buy them in the part. I'm hard-pressed to come up with anyone who could do it. Reece Shearsmith in Adventure in Time and Space didn't work for me at all.
That's the problem with actors playing The Doctor - they're cast in part because they don't look like everybody else, so replacing them is almost impossible.

I've been listening and reviewing a lot of Big Finish audio productions for the Wanderers in the 4th Dimension podcast. Frazer Hines (who played second Doctor companion Jamie McCrimmon) often plays the second Doctor for the audio dramatizations, and for good reason - his impression is spot on. With a bit of makeup, Frazer could probably pass as No. 2. You can actually hear a brief clip of Frazer doing his second Doctor impression on this interview (starting at around 4:40).
Not a bad impression. Although, if they go to the effort of bringing back Hines, I think most would be inclined to just see him play Jamie, a companion I've always felt should have made a return appearance. I know, Grant Morrison wrote a comic story that wrapped up Jamie, but I think the show itself could do something in canon (and with a happier resolution for him.)
Happy birthday to veteran Doctor Who actress Jean Marsh. Some people (myself included) classify Jean's 1st Doctor Sara Kingdom character as a companion. While Sara Kingdom's onscreen time was short-lived, her character lives on in Big Finish audio productions.
I consider Sara Kingdom a companion. She travels with The Doctor and Steven in the TARDIS through multiple adventures. It's only after the fact that fans decided to lump all her episodes within one 12-part storyline. You could just as easily split that story into 3 or even 4, effectively killing the argument that she only appeared in one story.
If Katarina and Kamelion are companions, then surely Sara is. And Hartnell's final season would have been greatly improved if we'd kept her and skipped Dodo.
Gamespot's Justin Haywald had an opportunity to sit down and chat with Peter Capaldi about his role in the upcoming Lego Dimensions game. If you listen to the Wanderers in the 4th Dimension podcast that I co-host, you may recall that Justin was our guest host for the series 8 finale.
