I know Star Wars #1 reviews are like a certain part of the human body but dang it this was great stuff. A Star Wars comic that sucked me into the universe and swallowed me whole. I enjoyed the wonder of what the next two pages or splash page revealed while being loyal to the characters in the classic films trilogy. I give Star Wars #1 a very strong 5 out 5. Now for something slightly different a review of Hellboy & the BPRD 1952 #2 (of 5) similar to Star Wars #1 you know they can't kill off the main character since it is only his first mission. Hellboy & the BPRD group is searching for answers to mysterious deaths in Brazil. Along the way in this issue a another death happens and something one of the BPRD does the unthinkable on the last page. This Hellboy & BPRD 1952 #2 earns a solid 5 out of 5 rating even if that last page isn't going to fool long term Hellboy fans it makes you wonder how will a non experienced Hellboy turn the tables against demons & those who are out to keep the secrets of Brazil buried.

Star Wars #1 was superb, and I also read the Primate Directive #1 & #2 with Star Trek Planet of the Apes crossover. It's fun.

Read about half of the Power Company run. Turns out that the bundle that I purchased was the 6 one-shot issues and the first 10 issues of the series. Overall, it was pretty decent. I've concluded that there was a lot about the way DC was coloring books and maybe a general feel of the art style doesn't thrill me. What I've really been liking is the notes at the back of the book that explicitly identify the references to past events and continuity and I'm loving the regular references to Invasion. I loved that storyline.

I've also been digging into the run of Shadowpact that I just picked up. It's curious how I end up having these little confluences. I'll do a movie binge and, as it's ending, realize that everything has had Gabriel Byrne in it or something like that. In this case, I get into the second issue of Shadowpact and who should show up but Witchfire of the Power Company.

For someone who reads much more DC then Marvel, I'm absolutely loving Thor right now. I read the Godbomb storyline in trade and also loved. Need to go back and pick up the rest now.

I just finished reading Savage Wolverine Kill Island HC. Frank Cho is worthy of all the praise for the art he puts into every page. From very stunning illustration of Shanna, The She Devil to big apes to Wolverine, Cho exceeded my expectations While the story is simple & direct, it is still very entertaining for me. The three words that should have been put on this collection's cover to help sell it more copies are "Bad Move Monkey". I give this collection a 4 stars out of 5 stars rating worth a read if you seek an adventure in your comic reading.

Star Wars #1 was not bad at all. Black Vortex #1, since the Trial of Jean Grey I really love the idea of the Guardians and X-Men teaming up.

I reread Books of Doom by Ed Brubaker. I read it when it first came out and liked it. I recently got a wild hair for it and picked up the last of the floppies from milehigh comic dirt cheap. I love a good Doom story.

Before that, I ordered Absolute Allstar Superman from instocktrades for like 45% off. So worth the money to read in absolute format.

Forgot to mention Multiversity Guidebook. I've been geeking out about that all week.

The best thing I read in months finally arrived today -- Superman Earth One Vol. 3 HC by JMS, Ardian Syaf & Sandra Hope. Imagine a great Superman IV: The Quest for Peace w/ General Zod from Superman II w/ a different costume put into a comic. This made me over the galaxy happy while savoring each page. Yes, General Zod & Superman going toe to toe w/ a twist. Secrets revealed. Shocking What the Hell moment to surprise long time fans. Closing out with a speech at the end that is better than the one Superman gave at the end of Superman IV. The only downside was the art by Ardian Syaf at first I thought the redhead at the farm was his neighbor but was actually his mom, Martha. That is the only bad mark I can give this volume. This latest entry into Superman Earth One gets a 4.75 stars rating out of 5 stars.

I read Hellboy & BPRD 1952 issues 4 & 5 this weekend. The series shows the Hellboy fighting Nazis, an undead Nazi scientist and his army of helper monkeys in his first mission. Top marks go to Alex Maleev for his superior art talents on this miniseries. If anyone is curious about Hellboy, they should read this when it is collected in late August. In addition w/ the volume that started it all Hellboy Seed of Destruction w/ Magnola on art duties to get a sense of the character. I give Hellboy & BPRD 1952 4 & 1/2 stars out of 5 stars just superb. This series will continue w/ 1953 miniseries later this year.

Lone Wolf and Cub 1, First Comics

“I have decided to escape, to defy the shogun. Today I will begin walking the road to hell. But you will choose your own path. So, soon you may be seeing heaven. Choose the sword, and you will join me. Choose the ball and you join your mother, in death. You don’t understand my words, but you must choose. So… come boy, choose life or death.”

I have been enjoying DC's OGNs, but this comment just got to me and I had to reread it several times before I could move on. ;)

I enjoyed this volume much more than the previous one. Character designs were better.
It really sucked when Clark went back to the crash sight and the item was missing.

I loved what I've read of Fables, Astro City, and Ex Machina. I have a huge chunk of Vampire in digital that I haven't made time for, yet. I was never interested in the Goon. You are the third person to mention it in the past week or two. Maybe I'll check it out (after I read American Vampire).

    Silver Surfer #11
Palmiotti & Brady's The Big Con Job #2
Big Trouble In Little China #1-4
    Bitch Planet #4
    Capture Creatures #3

Silver Surfer is easily my favorite book being published right now. Slott and the Allreds belong together. Issue #11 was the most ambitious of the series yet and was one of the most unique reading experiences I've had since the first issue of ODY-C.

The Big Con Job continues to present a surprisingly serious tone with only occasional humor injected to break up the tension but that works very well for it. It has all of the elements of a great heist story, supplying the audience with characters we can care about and the very real threat of danger looming over them if the plan goes wrong.

Big Trouble In Little China is one of the most fun books I'm reading right now. I found the first four issues at a thrift store for 47¢ a piece and actually feel that I underpaid for the amount of laughs I got from them. Every issue so far has been instantly quotable and I'm looking forward to catching up.

Bitch Planet not only continues to deliver on the action and character development but also continues to deliver thought-provoking letters and essays in the back of the book on the topic of feminism by Kelly Sue DeConnick and an assortment of guest writers. The love Kelly has for this book is only rivaled by the love her fans clearly have for it as witnessed in the letters page. Oh, and the fake ads on the back covers continue to be strokes of genius.

Capture Creatures is just good clean fun and while I'm certainly not the target age demographic for the book, it makes me feel like a kid again experiencing Pokémon for the first time. I'm having a good time seeing all of the new creature designs every issue. The only negative critique I have for it is that it seems like it doesn't quite know where it's going yet but the journey is so much fun that I'm willing to be patient and give it the benefit of the doubt.

I apologize for the long ramblings. I hope I've done an adequate job selling some of these books for those of you not currently reading them.

knock-knock Chinese Mafia Assasin and I'm here to rub... you out baw-chicha-wawaw

So I 65% enjoyed Crying Freeman volume one. It had pretty much everything I would want from a 1980s asian action movie. Yakuza, the Triad, awesome action scenes. The art is amazing; the story ia pretty good.

Now for the 35% I really hated. So you know how people say you can the difference in art and porn when you see it? Yeah there is most diffently chunks of porn scattered all in the 396 pages. That's not really my idea of enjoyable comics.

Overall I thought it was good comics and glad I read it. I could flip past the entire assasin banging his virgin target and blackmail scenes without mising much.

    Abigail And The Snowman #1
    The Dead Rider TPB
    Egg Story TPB
    Feathers #4
    Neverboy #1-2
    Past Aways #1-2

Out of all of these, my favorites were probably Abigail And The Snowman #1 and Feathers #4. Boom! is putting out some amazing titles currently and I'm really enjoying their all ages stuff.

Also, Egg Story was surprisingly touching (and in some ways quite disturbing). Now I wonder if Slave Labor Graphics will pull a Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash and have the surviving eggs team up against Milk and Cheese?
  • Ms. Marvel #15, Secret Wars #2, Lazarus Book One, X-Force: Dirty/Tricks, X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills, and Miracleman Book One: A Dream of Flying

I highly enjoyed all of them. Miracleman is great, I love where Secret Wars is going, and everything else was superb. I'd never read GLMK, so I'm glad I finally have. Superb storytelling, and well-deserving of its status as one of THE iconic X-Men stories.
