Is this our first look at a new Star Wars episode VII character? J.J. Abrams recently announced a new Star Wars affiliated charity. As Abrams is giving his pitch (see video below), this creature walks up behind him.
I thought this campaign recently released was a smart idea AND a cool way to give a glimpse into some on set stuff. I like the creature in the video because it looks like they are (at least for some stuff) going back to puppetry and practical effects. I know there will be CG stuff, and that is fine, but I definitely want practical stuff like this guy.
The contest has one of the coolest grand prizes ever (for a Star Wars fan like me). Sure, there is a chance the scene the winner is in gets left on the cutting room floor, but if I was the winner, I wouldn't care. For a huge fan like me, the experience would be priceless. Anyone have $50k they want to give me so I can get those most entries I can? LOL
I'm a assuming the creature in the charity video is a puppet (and for clarification, I'm not referring to J.J. Abrams), but considering how many years have transpired, since the prequels, I haven't ruled out the possibility that digital technology has progressed to the point that a CGI character has the potential to be indistinguishable from a hand-crafted one. Of course, the creature could also be (and very likely is) a combination of good-old fashioned puppeteering combined with post-production CGI.
Is this part of fallout from throwing out every extended universe story beyond the previous 6 episodes...and the cartoons?
Maybe? They do refer to the X Wing being upgraded over the years. But like a pick up truck, while it gets faster, stronger, more deadly, etc the basic shape remained the same.
I'm sure the new one still forms an X somehow and I'm not going to get all crazy and say they are betraying the fans, but I do think someone working on the production design team saw a Z95 and thought "hey! Let's make that the new X Wing"

anybody else a little on the fence about that title? Actually scratch that. I'm not on the fence. I flat out don't like it. not saying i wont go see it. but that title seems really off to me. is this some Gaia mother earth action? Captain Planet meets Yoda?

This sounds like they are really trying to fix some of the prequel ridiculousness.
"I am all for Disney retconning anything from the prequels they can."
I fully concur.
