X-Files used to call them "Monster of the Week" episodes, and they'd generally do two MoW's to one story-driven episode. In Agents of SHIELD's case, they're the leftover Chitauri superflu, or the guy from Dragonslayer turning out to be more than he seems. The formula works.
I call them "Agents of SHIELD actually doing their damned jobs instead of pursuing their personal agendas episodes."
Like CSI did. At least when I watched up until Grissom's departure. I found the non-serial format to get boring after a while.
I watch this with my wife and kids. We enjoy it. I would like to see more characters from the Marvel universe introduced. I recognized Deathlok from the start...
quite a few of the stand alone episodes have already paid dividends in some of the latter episodes, i have a feeling by the end of the first season there will be fewer stand alone episodes still as we see what they were setting up
i think the term pipe episode might be appropriate
It's been said somewhere that Carol is somebody that they want taken care of in the cinematic universe. It's been teased that a movie for her is being talked about and that is tied to the meeting that the Marvel Studios people had with Katee Sackoff some number of months ago.
Coulson's team was just manipulated into taking down the super-secret put-the-dead-back-together facility before the attempt on Fury's life by The Winter Soldier. "The Clairvoyant" wants to make sure Fury stays dead.

Plus, Captain Marvel just doesn't fit in the show's budget or concept.
Don't get me wrong. I would much rather see Captain/Ms. Marvel introduced on the big screen. However, injecting Skye with Kree DNA is a short and sweet origin that's fairly true to the comics and it brings in some diversity. Btw, Skye could just hint at new abilities in AoS. Powers could manifest, and she could go full costume in the movies.
Dear Marvel: please keep Skye (both the character and the actor) the hell away from your cinematic universe. There is not enough Kree DNA in the world to make her watchable.
Okay, so I have to note the Triathlon references. In the comics, Triathlon's real last name is Garrett. Agent Garrett's sidekick in the show was named 'Triplett'. And, the interface was called 'Triskelion'. Are these coincidences, do y'all think?
I suspect that they're setting it up so that, if the storyline requires it, they can make Triplett into Triathlon later. I don't have much basis for that hunch, admittedly, but I do suspect it.

Who was the blue "HG" guy? He was in water so maybe an Atlantian?
Human Giant?
Holy Guacamole?
Henry Gyrich?
Honey Grahams?
Heavy Gravity?
HG: Highest Genius.... (had to use a thesarus to make that one work right)
I'd much rather see a proper Carol Danvers.

I just don't see that actress being able to carry a feature film.
Even a made-for-SYFY feature.
