Marvel Starts ‘Doctor Strange’ Search: Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch Early Wish-Listers

Marvel is putting together its cast list, and Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch are on it. While Marvel has teased this property with mentions in films including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the film solidified and felt urgent when Scott Derrickson tweeted this week that he will direct the script by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. The character has been around since the early 1960s, during that crazy period where just about all the spandex-clad heroes in all the Hollywood blockbusters were hatched at Marvel Comics headquarters (that might be a movie). Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created the character in 1963 as a neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, protecting Earth against magical and mystical threats with powers of sorcery, mysticism, and martial arts. Marvel’s Kevin Feige is producing.

These two guys aren’t the only ones in the mix, but let’s face it, they are both poised to become major stars. Hardy, by way of playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, is closer. He just starred in the superb Steven Knight-directed drama Locke, and he wrapped Child 44 and Mad Max: Fury Road. Cumberbatch, coming off August: Osage County and 12 Years A Slave, next will be seen starring in the Morten Tyldum-directed Imitation Game, which The Weinstein Company opens on November 21 during Oscar season. Both of them have been lining up movies left and right, so scheduling might be an issue. We’ll see who Marvel ultimately lands, but it’s hard to go wrong either way here if one of these guys get the job.

I think I'd be up for a Sherlock Strange :)

Not sure I think about Dr. Strange with either of those two, but that's probably just because I think of Bane and that voice he did. Cumberbatch has the right body, now can he pull off that mustache is the question for me. No matter who they have I'm stoked for this movie.

If he's not going to be cast as The Shadow/Kent Allard, then I'd like to see Alexis Denisof as Doc Strange. He's already got some experience with casting spells.

I see the role going to a near A-lister, though. Strange is more a C-level character & they'd want that extra pull.

Hmm... how about Matt Smith? I think that would be a nice left field choice.

This is a tough one for me. I'm not much of a dr.S fan and know little of him. Neither of these two fit for me. One of the few times I actually would say ok to Depp. Liam Neason though would be my top choice if he were 10 years younger. Depp might even be pushing the age? I think a slightly older actor would be best but 50ish limit.

A few other names that have been bandied about are Viggo Mortensen, Jared Leto, and Aidan Gillen. I could accept any of those as well, depending on the era.

I would say Steve Buscemi would be great for the role. And with Boardwalk Empire ending this season he is available.

Out of all the comic movies we have gotten since 1997 this is the one I am the most excited about. Been a huge Dr Strange fan since the late 70s.

I sure do love Doc Strange, and that is a fantastic list. There is something... "not right" about the dude that makes him so intriguing. Simultaneously kinda feeble and terrifyingly powerful.

Edgar Ramirez of Deliver Us from Evil has revealed that he has been talking to Marvel about a role in Doctor Strange (possibly as the villain Baron Mordu, whom he sort of resembles?)...

I have reservations about a Doctor Strange solo movie. The character doesn't have the advantage of being featured in a recent, critically acclaimed story line. That isn't' to say that the right guy couldn't make a great movie.
I think it would be great to see the MCU Tony Stark spare with Strange. Two guys that are opposite sides of the same coin. Equally brilliant. Equally gifted in their fields of expertise. One firmly entrenched in the physical, the other existing in the spiritual.

Brian K Vaughan's Doctor Strange: The Oath is fairly recent and well received. Although I don't know why a recent story line matters. They'd just be doing his origin anyways.

Here is a LINK to the "D" section of The Appendix to the Handbook of the Marvel Universe website. Scroll down to all the doctors.. @WetRats is right...they only have about a million possible characters to chose from..and that's not to say he isn't a totally new "Doctor."

The new Doctor Strange movie apparently won’t be showing an origin for the character. It will just begin with the character already established as the Sorcerer Supreme. An exciting new approach.
