I'm surprised that people are still surprised by Avengers success :D
I don't think anyone's surprised at it's success, but they're surprised at how successful it actually is. We knew it was going to make a lot of money and be one of the biggest films of the year, but it's tracking to be one of the biggest films ever.
The movie was estimated to make $65-67M on Friday for a $160M domestic opening. That would put it past The Dark Knight's $158M, making it the biggest opening for a comic book movie.
But, Avengers overperformed and actually made $80M on Friday. Now they're looking at a $175M domestic opening, which would put it above The Deathly Hallows Part 2's $169M. That would give Avengers the biggest opening of all time for any movie. Even if it doesn't beat Harry Potter, it will come close and have the second biggest opening of all time.

In the late 70s, Jack Kirby was hired to create artwork for set designs for an upcoming adaptation of Lord of Light. This film never went into production. Some time later, during the Iran hostage crisis, the CIA obtained the script and Kirby's designs, renamed the script Argo, and used a fake film production in order to rescue a group of US diplomats. This movie is based on those events. Michael Parks is listed as playing Jack Kirby.

The Disney disappointment zoomed back up the box office charts after being paired with the Marvel blockbuster this weekend.
John Carterzoomed up the domestic box office office chart from No. 38 the week before to No. 12 -- thanks to being paired with The Avengers at more than 150 drive-ins across the country.
John Carter -- which resulted in a $200 million loss for Disney -- grossed $1.5 million and was up a staggering 1,223 percent over the previous weekend. The film's domestic gross is now $70.8 million, while it has grossed $208.2 million overseas. Those are big numbers, but a hefty production budget and marketing spend put Disney into the red.
It's common practice for drive-ins to offer double features. Usually, however, it doesn't boost the older film's bottom line to such a degree. But Avengers did such massive business -- the film opened to $207.4 million, the biggest opening of all time --that it made a difference.
The average cost of a drive-in ticket is $8. Studios don't disclose how they divvy up the ticket sales between two films playing in a double feature.
I'm all for mindless popcorn movies. I love most of Michael bay's films. But battleship is the wrong kind of dreck. No script. They filmed the ending several times. Throwing scads of money at good actors to gain cred. It was due more than a year ago. It's been in post for more than a year!
