WOW! i missed the awesome Asian-American Iron Fist and Chinese cinema discussion!!!
my desire to see an Asian-American iron fist is just out of my own greedy wishes... really nothing to do with how the Chinese market will react to it... i could really care less about the Chinese market...
i just think it'd be awesome to see an asian-american hero on the small or big screen! and iron fist kind of fits... and is low profile enough that marvel might take a gamble
Ive been thinking about this & not sure where I fall. On one hand, making a character like Wilson Fisk a different ethnicity didn't change to core of the character.
I'm not fluent enough with Rand's character to say the same. From what I perceive to know, isn't being Caucasian (or at least non-Asian) apart of the character?
M
It's always been part of the origin, and my initial reaction is that it is important, but when I take time to think back on what I've read of Iron Fist (which is admittedly just the Fraction run and probably a handful of his early appearances and some Heroes for Hire back in the '80s), I can't recall a single moment where his being white was essential. Sure, you lose some surface elements, but I don't see how it effects the core of the character.
Interesting.
Another thought; would making a character deep in martial arts origins an Asian character be perceived as stereotyping? I'm wondering if casting a non-Caucasian & non-Asian actor would be a better route. You'd eliminate a Karate Kid comments & stereotypes by casting, say a Hispanic actor.

i like the columnists take on that topic...
"In fact, let’s imagine a rich, one-percenter, Asian American Danny Rand having an identity crisis. Imagine that his immigrant parents toiled and worked their asses off and did manage to attain the American Dream. However, in their struggle to do so, they neglected to pass down their cherished heritage to their seemingly indifferent son.
Until the movie starts, that is.
Imagine a Danny Rand who just wants to be classified as “American” and not just “Asian”. Who was taught all this bizarre martial arts sh*t as a kid, but wrongfully rejected it because it “too Asian” and “lame”. Who slowly accepts this and reconciles this with his identity as he uses his innate abilities to become a real hero."
anyway.. it's just a would-be-nice... i dont think anyone is saying this has to be done... just shows u how there's PLENTY of asian-american comic book fans AND creators... and we'd love a shot at some positive representation! =)
Until Danny Rand is cast as a blonde Asian, there's always the new Master of Kung Fu mini series being published this May...
They haven't done MoKF right since the original series ended. They came close once, but I'm not sure about this one. From the blurb it sounds like they're turning him into Drunken Master, and I don't see Shang Chi going down that path.
With any luck we'll get to hear the immortal line, "Where's my money, honey?"
Chances are they'll slip it in when Luke is looking for loose change or something; something more pedestrian than Von Doom. But Doom would be sweet...damn you Fox.
I would be happy with a "sweet Christmas" or an old picture with an Afro and head band.
I also hope that Luke's power level is low...3-5 tons...and not the 25 ton version. He is often depicted as a Doc Samson level character (75 tons?) . This irks me.
"As my video review above says, Marvel’s Daredevil is the TV offering from the superhero giant that we’ve been waiting for. With Spartacus creator Steven S. DeKnight as showrunner and Boardwalk Empire alum Charlie Cox as the blind protector of a very rotten Big Apple, the 13-episode first season leaves the painful 2003 Ben Affleck movie a very distant memory.
With influences including features The Raid, District 13 and Taxi Driver, this very stylized Daredevil is hard to take your eyes off – which is a way of warning you that there might be some bingeing in your weekend. To that end, let’s give a shout-out to former showrunner Drew Goddard, who wrote the opening episodes."
I'm hoping this'll be available on a torrent site when I get home from work tonight.
Yeah, yeah. I know. Torrents are bad.
For the record, I DO have a Netflix subscription. But depending on how many people are using the wi-fi, it likes to buffer a bit too much for my liking. And I'd rather watch this new series free of any frustration and breaks in entertainment that WEREN'T caused by me.
This is the first time I am actually excited by a TV superhero premier. I am typically weary of most series because of soap opera tropes they fall into. I realize comic books are soap operas with testosterone....
Not sure how many of you visit the comiXology sale thread, but this is on until the 12th.
Also, the following DD collections are also on sale for $5: Daredevil: Born Again (reg. 14.99) Daredevil by Frank Miller and Klaus Johnson vol. 1 (reg. 24.99) Daredevil by Bendis & Maleev vol. 1 (reg. 29.99) Daredevil by Mark Waid vol. 1 (Waid 2011 series) (reg. 10.99) Daredevil vol. 1: Devil at Bay (Waid 2014 series) (reg. 17.99) Daredevil: Guardian Devil (Smith & Quesada) (reg. 14.99)

So who's staying up late to watch at least one episode after midnight tonight?
Maybe I'll get up early instead.
